Sophie's debut album, Tongues and Tails was released in 1992. It achieved both critical acclaim and worldwide commercial success. The single Damn I Wish I Was Your Lover went to #5 on the Billboard Hot 100 Singles' chart. Whaler, her second album, was released in 1994. It also contained a Top 10 hit, the song As I Lay Me Down.

The documentary The Cream Will Rise (1998) by Gigi Gaston follows her around during one of her tours and her trying to deal with a trouble past with her family, including her mom and brother. This film wonderfully intercuts her music and various scenes and riffs.

Sophie had to fight with her record company for a long time to get Timbre released. She wanted to put a banjo in the song Lose Your Way, but her company wanted to force her to put something else in it, like a guitar or something. She finally won with the help of a loosely knit group of internet fans.

Timbre was released again in 2001 on Sophie B. Hawkins's own label. It was bundled with a bonus disc containing new songs, demos, remixes, and videos.

Her first independently recorded and released album, Wilderness, was released in 2004.

Much of her songs seems to be the kind that is not necessarily massively appealing, but to those who for some reason have a peculiar connection to it, or feel that it somehow speaks things they have not heard elsewhere, it is almost 'life changing' when they encounter it.
