BandMetallica
Lars Ulrich is the drummer of Metallica, a heavy metal band which originally appeared in California, USA. He was born in Gentofte, Denmark on the day after Christmas, December 26, 1963 to a middle-class family and worked in a gas station and as a paper boy during his childhood/teens. Ulrich moved to Los Angeles, California at the age of ten, and at the age of thirteen he begged his grandmother to buy him his first drum kit. The kit was a Ludwig because he wanted to have the same drum kit as Ian Paice of Deep Purple. After publishing an advertisement in a local Los Angeles newspaper, called The Recycler, he met James Hetfield and created a band whose name would be well-known for millions of people world wide - Metallica. In recent years Ulrich's marriage failed.

His father, Torben Ulrich, was already a musician, playing jazz, and he had a jazz club which Lars was in a lot as a child. Because of his early introduction to music, it isn't quite surprising where his interests in music come from. What was surprising, however, was when Lars made a sudden and dramatic change in his musical interests: he went from loving jazz to becoming obsessed with the NWOBHM — New Wave Of British Heavy Metal — the heavy metal era that was sweeping its heavy, rough, leather-clad way through all of Britain. However, that doesn't mean it stayed in Britain. All this meant was it started there, and all of the bands that were a part of this head-banging crusade were based or had originated in some part, remote or not, of Britain. Lars' first concert was that of great metal — Deep Purple in Copenhagen when he was barely nine years old. Needless to say, he instantly became a fan.
