Fact Sheet

Musical genre:Latin Pop
City  Miami, Florida, USA
When we talk about perfect music fusion, we are obliged to talk about GRAMMY winning Bacilos, a musical group composed by three Latin American musicians who reside in the United States and whose work has given a greater dimension to the meaning of the name they carry.

Never again, will Bacilos mean exclusively bacteria; neither will it be a term associated only with a biology class. Thanks to this musical group Bacilos (Bacillus) is now a synonym of musical excellence, music with our soil's flavor; our countries' flavor. Any Latin American who listens to them will entirely and immediately identify themselves with the work of this remarkable group, because they have elements that come all the way from Tierra del Fuego, pass through the Caribbean to finally melt with the influences of the North America's musical waves.

This is the musical proposal that Bacilos presents in Caraluna, their second album produced for Warner Music Latina and released in 2002. In Caraluna they bring to us a musical work without ties, full of feelings, emotions and nostalgia, all of these poured in to one expression. Winner of the prestigious Best Latin Pop Album GRAMMY and 2 LATIN GRAMMY Awards for Best Pop Vocal Album by Duo or Group and Best Tropical Song (Mi Primer Millón) Caraluna was produced by Sergio George (Huey Dunbar, Celia Cruz, Marc Anthony), Luis Fernando Ochoa (Shakira) and by Bacilos, contains eleven delicious songs that will awaken all of our senses. Solid songwriting mixed with traditional Caribbean rhythms makes Bacilos one of the best, most solid pop bands I have ever worked with, says Ochoa, producer of 9 tracks of Caraluna, about the record.

Also, recognized urban sound music producer Sergio George (Marc Anthony, Celia Cruz), describes Caraluna as one of the most exciting alternative pop albums in years. George masterly produced two of the album's tunes, Buena (Good) and Mi Primer Millón (My First Million). Since its released Caraluna rocketed to the top of the charts throughout the world; achieving the # 1 spot in Mexico, Argentina, Colombia, Peru, Venezuela, Guatemala, Dominican Republic, Chile, Honduras, Ecuador; remaining among the Top 15 Hits on Billboard's Latin charts.

From L. A. Times to Billboard, Dallas Morning News to the Miami Herald, from the Daily News to the Chicago Sun Times, the band has been heralded as a precious gem, receiving glowing reviews This is the sound of a band making great music writes CDNOW and the Miami Newtimes concurs "Bacilos' fusion of Latin folk traditions with good old rock and roll is just the antidote for homogenized Latin pop." Multiple Gold Records, numerous articles and reviews featured in the most important publications around the globe and their constant musical evolution has brought the attention of many who have recognized the vital role that Bacilos has had in the industry as well as with their fans. For this and for their constant dedication and contribution to music that Heineken awarded the band with their AMP AWARD in a special ceremony last may.

Caraluna has as a solid base due to the extensive work done by Bacilos during the last few years while touring all Latin America, Europe and United States. The band's captivating live performance has made them one of the most coveted bands in Latin music, taking the audience through a rollercoaster of emotions where laughter, romance, joy and melancholy will flourish, connecting with each one of those present in the audience as if they had their own private concert. Their sold-out shows, as part of the Tour Caraluna 2003, in some of the most important cities around the world such as New York, Washington D.C, Chicago, Los Angeles, Buenos Aires, Lima, Bogota among others and reviews like the Chicago Sun Times which writes The men of this Miami sound machine can outrock established Latin heavyweights like Maná and La Ley (and even their American counterparts, for that matter., are solid prove that Bacilos have positioned themselves as one of the leading bands among the industry.

For Colombian singer/songwriter and guitarist Jorge Villamizar, Puerto Rican percussionist and drummer Jose Javier Freire and Brazilian bassist Andre Lopes, these two years of continuous presentations have added a priceless experience to their interpretative and creative capacity. With the exception of one song, Villamizar wrote all the Caraluna's tunes, in diverse and distant cities like Barcelona and San Juan.

The creative process for Caraluna was very experimental, giving more space and free rein to Bacilos' imagination, inspiration and adventure; without diminishing the great level of energy given to us in their first production, self titled Bacilos. Their first album was nominated for Best New Album and Best Album by a Duo or Group at the 2001 Latin Grammy Awards. They obtained a gold album in Colombia and the single Tabaco y Chanel, attained the #1 position on radio in Latin America. Caraluna (term created by Bacilos to say cara de luna face of the moon) includes a variety of themes like the one who gives name to the album, a poem that describes the struggle of a man to forget a woman. It also includes the pop ballad Solo un Segundo (Only a Second), Barcelona (a melody with bossa nova, tango and flamenco influences), inspired on a bohemian night and Viejo (Old) a catchy tune that reflects the passage of time.

The album is complete with songs such as the LATIN GRAMMY award winning Mi primer Millón, a Caribbean Cumbia with a funky flavor and the ska Elena, the only English song in the album. When you listen to these songs this musical bacillus will possess your system and another type of bacteria will take over your whole body.
