Los Van Van

Fact Sheet

No facts available.
Los Van Van is a Cuban band led by Juan Formell, a guitarist who began playing in 1967 in Elio Reve's charanga orchestra. Formell reformatted the group into Changui '68, and then founded his own group, Van Van.

Van Van was the first Cuban group to use synthesizers, trombones, drum machines and vocal trios. Their sound was a fusion of son montuno with Yoruba West African music, and it came to be known as songo (later to become timba).

Past members include Pedro Calvo, Mayito Rivera, Pupi Pedroso and Formell's son, Samuel Formell.
