Mudhoney was formed when Mark Arm left Green River, and joined up with former Green River bandmate Steve Turner. Turner had left the band before Arm, but both left for similar reasons. They were joined by former Melvins bass player Matt Lukin (replaced in 2001 by Guy Maddison) by and drummer Dan Peters.
Mudhoney were a band who were an inspiration for a generation of song writters (even if they didn't know it) and were an influence of many, including Kurt Cobain.
The band have proved their diversity which can be seen in their Since We've Become Translucent album.
Mudhoney's career is chronicled in Our Band Could Be Your Life, a study of several important American underground rock groups.
