Jhene Aiko Chilimbo was born on 16 March 1988 in Inglewood, California. Jhene's parents are Tina Chilimbo and Anthony Chilimbo. She is the cousin of Lil' Fizz (from B2K).

She signed her first record deal at the age of 13 with Epic Records. After a bunch of collaborations, Jhene finally released her debut single in 2003. The single, called No L.O.V.E. was produced by Kay Gee and was originally released a year before by Kay Gee's group Tha' Rayne.

Jhene's single didn't get the attention expected by her label who delayed (once more) and then cancelled the release of her long-awaited debut album.
