Doug Supernaw is a country music singer from Texas. He is best known for his one Billboard #1 hit in 1993, a cover version of Kenny Rogers' "I Don't Call Him Daddy."
Music
In addition to his one number one hit, "I Don't Call Him Daddy," Supernaw is known for 1993's "Reno," 1994's "What'll You Do About Me," and 1995's "
Not Enough Hours in the Night," and sang a duet with the Beach Boys on their 1996 album, "Stars and Stripes, Vol. 1." His band is called The Possum-Eatin' Cowboys, previously the Texas Steel Band. He cites Vern Gosdin, Gene Watson, and
Willie Nelson as his musical influences, and patterns his shows to some extent after
Jimmy Buffett. He entered one concert, at the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo, by descending on a guywire from the roof of the Astrodome. At another concert in Canada, he dove into a mud pit in the crowd while singing without dropping a note. Supernaw was nominated for the Academy of Country Music's New Male Vocalist of the Year Award in 1994. His music video for "I Don't Call Him Daddy" was nominated for Video of the Year by both the ACM and Music City News. He received Music Row Magazine's Video of the Year for his "
She Never Looks Back." The video for his 1999 single "21 - 17" video was number one on Great American Country for 5 consecutive weeks.
Life
Supernaw was born on September 26, 1960, in Bryan, Texas. He briefly attended college on a golf scholarship, but dropped out to play music in honkytonk bars. He traveled to Nashville in the mid-80s to write for other artists, but soon left to go home to Texas, where his career took off. His first album,
Red and Rio Grande, was recorded for the indie label BNA Records. Shortly after the album's release, Supernaw broke his neck surfing; not long after the neck brace was removed, he was in a head-on car crash. About that same time, he nearly died from food poisoning, and all his band's gear was stolen in Ohio. Fortunately, he rebounded and put out another album on BNA. He is also greatly influenced by the death of his second cousin Calvin, who died while they were traveling to the Texas State Fair when Supernaw was a teenager. He has 8 children from multiple marriages; his website says he likes Jack in the Box, golf, antiques, and the state of Texas. Supernaw has been arrested on multiple occasions. For example, he was jailed for six months in October 2001 for contempt of court and failure to pay $135,000 in child support. In December 2003, he was given 14 days in jail and fined $1500 for resisting arrest at a nightclub, and charged with assaulting a peace officer. He was arrested again in March, 2005 for public intoxication in his hometown of Bryan, TX, but was later found not guilty. His evading arrest charge from the same incident, however, remains pending.
