Daniel Johns has also worked with paulmac in The Dissociatives and also had a fourth member, Tobin Finnane. The group met at Ben's garage to play covers of Deep Purple, Led Zeppelin, Black Sabbath and others. However, Tobin moved overseas, and the band became a trio.
After winning a demo-contest, with the song "Tomorrow" the band became big during the grunge hype in the early 1990s. Their first LP Frogstomp was made a very short time after Silverchair won the contest. After Frogstomp, skeptics called this album light-grunge, Silverchair released Freak Show. This album contains very dark songs, pretty heavy/grungy, but it never became as big as Frogstomp.
The albums Neon Ballroom and Diorama are not very much like their first two albums. Neon Ballroom is a lot more than just a grunge album. The band started to sound more classical and fragile.
