sorry gary but the 1st two reviews were spot on. i have a "greatest
surf hits" CD that contains the original "surf city". not sure why
the record label didn't use the original. didn't notice
the changes in "dead man's curve" and "jennie lee" , though.

This is the real thing. The good old days of Jan & Dean and it is the original recordings not a re-recording.
April 5, 2007I agree with "A music fan" that some of these songs are not the original recordings, even though it says so on the cover. I'm tossing this one out to buy a different one.
September 16, 2006I'm one of Jan & Dean's biggest fans. However, I think that this CD is a very dissapointing collection. First of all, regardless of the fact that the cover says "original recordings," the version of "Surf City" included here is most definitely NOT the original recording. It doesn't even sound like Jan & Dean who are singing on this song. I have no idea where they found that recording of Surf City, but it sounds nothing like the original hit that is played on the radio! Secondly, the version of "Deadman's Curve" which is included here is the album version, which sounds quite different from the single version. It was the single version which actually became the hit and got played on the radio. The version of "Jennie Lee" included here is a re-corded version that Jan & Dean did in 1960. It is not the original hit single from 1958 (actually released as "Jan & Arnie"), and once again, is not the version that is played on the radio. If you're looking to hear the original Jan & Dean HITS as you would hear them on the radio, or on the original 45's, this collection is not what you are looking for.
October 20, 2000 | | The Beach Boys did this better | |
It's funny that it was originally Jan and Dean who influenced The Beach Boys, not vice versa. Jan and Dean are certainly influential but this doesn't mean that they are good. They were quite bad singers but recorded a few great songs (most notably Surf City) with Brian Wilson of The Beach Boys. Maybe I would like this better if The Beach Boys hadn't done this surf music thing so much better.
