About Digital Underground - Sex Packets

This huge, cartoonish Californian crew, helmed by concept-man Shock-G, seized on the ultra-bassy funk woob-woob of Parliament-Funkadelic as the platform for its ensemble tomfoolery. At its best, it's inspired, daffy give-and-take that you can shake your rump to, especially on the hits "Doowutchalike" and "The Humpty Dance" and the ridiculous aquatic hip-hop fantasia "Underwater Rimes." At times, though, an uncomfortable current of leering misogyny surfaces. The disc ends with a suite of tracks about an imaginary safe-sex drug, the "sex packets" of the title. The concept gets stretched pretty thin, but "Packet Man," a cunning dialogue between Shock G (as a dealer) and his Groucho-nosed alter ego Humpty Hump (as his customer), is outright adorable. --Douglas Wolk Amazon.com

Many people might not remember Digital Underground, and if they do, they probably remember the debut single "The Humpty Dance". Digital Underground consited of: Shock G., Humpty Hump, Fuze, Money B., Kenny K. (and later on 2Pac, Saafir, and Pee Wee). The whole album has a mix of goofy tales mixed with a laid back vibe, at the same time can make you dance at some points.

Aside from the lead single, there are many funky tracks all over this album. "The Way We Swing" is a laid back head nodder. "Gutfest '89" has a funny concept behind it. "Danger Zone" is inspired by The Parlament with a recognizable sample used in that song. I believe the best track on the album is "Doowhutchyalike", that song is hilarious. "Sex Packets" is another long and mellow track with a weird sample. The last actual track is "Packet Man" where Shock G. and Humpty Hump go back and forth selling sex packets. Then the last track on the album closes off with a short instrumental of the title track.

"Sex Packets" is a wonderful album. This is one I would recommend to fans of early 90's rap. Even if you never heard of this group, I still would recommend that you check this album out, because the album is just so great. If you enjoyed this album, I also recommend you check out their next two full length albums Sons of the P & The Body-Hat Syndrome as well. Peace.

P.S.: Like a lot of reviewers said, some of the tracks were omitted from the CD version of this album that were origonally on cassette tape. I know "Hip Hop Doll" and a longer version of "Gutfest '89" were some of the songs, and you might be able to find those track floating around on the internet to download.

This is a brilliant album, and it's a damn shame there hasn't been a well-deserved, deluxe, lovingly thorough reissue of it that includes the extra songs from the CD and the cassette. This version, the cassette version, features these four songs that aren't on its CD counterpart: 1. Hip Hop Doll, 2. Gutfest '89 (Full Length Long Version), 3. Sound of the Underground, 4. A Tribute to the Early Days. If you're a fan of Parliament Funkadelic, subsonic bass grooves, great beats, loopy lyrics and awesomely layered group rhymes that meander all over the place and finally come back to where they started, you'll need both the CD and cassette versions of this album! Then move on to "This is an EP release" and "Sons of the P"...more brilliant D.U. music. November 25, 2007

Great Album! Never to be forgotten. I was just getting out of High school when this album had dropped and it really blew me away when I first heard the entire album. At first I heard the humpty dance and thought that in order for me to get this album, I had to listen to it first and its a very versitile one. Songs such as freaks of the industry, Do what U like, and underwater rimes really set the album off. other tracks like gut fest 89 and danger zone were definitely the bomb. This album is timeless and will never fade away. One more thing. When the original album came out, ther were more tracks on it which included certain excerpts of underground DU mixes. If anyone know how to acess that or may have a way of gettin it pls let me know. thxs July 13, 2007

I like this cd b/c its part rap and part FUNK. Parliment Funkadelic is sampled to the max but that is a good thing.

The 2 best songs are Humpty Dance and Dowatchyalike. Great party tunes with a cool, perverted sense of humor. The rest of the songs are good, but the others are the standouts.

The music is not dated b/c funk/ P-funk is timeless. I love to upset hardcore rappers by telling them that Tupac never did any better than when he was with the Digital Underground.

Want to get a party started or even better ...get lucky? Put on the Humpty Dance for your significant other, dance around with no shame or inhibitions, and your honey will just melt. Who can resist "my nose is like a pickle and in the 69 position it'll tickle your rear" (I think that's the lyric)
