| | (less than 1 star) SUB -UK SUBS (and that believe me that is sub) | |
Dross. My copy had a ten minute life - went into the garbage when I got to the fourth (it felt like fortieth) track. Its all shout, shout, shout, boring , boring. I like angry music, but there has to be some skill and subtlety, not just "I'm angry". The people who like this CD will use the "kickass" defence, meaning it's great because the lead singer is sweating when he's singing this garbage. As for the socio-political message of this record, I was a teenager in Thatcher's Britain and living in a poor housing estate but even I can't get anything out of this. I hate the "Oy I'm a cockney (meaning I'm from London)guy" style the lead singer has. It's what all Britains most one dimensional punk bands (UK subs or Sham 69 or all that Oi! stuff for example) rely on to make themselves sound authentic and angry. I'd be angry if I listened to that stuff all day. Britains best ever punk group are from the north of England and are just as passioniate as "The Subhumans". The group are, of course, Leatherface. Leatherface's singer and guitarist, Frankie Stubbs can to do more with his little finger than the whole of The Subhumans with their all their posturing and ranting and heavy sweating. I repeat - The Subhumans are dross (means garbage). If you choose to spend even 10 dollars on this, then please, don't blame me. You should be putting the 10 dollars towards "Mush" or "Horsebox" by Leatherface. It makes me angry that people could think that this album should be even mentioned in same breath as "Mush" by Leatherface!! Name the great (or even bearable) songs on "The Day the Country died"?
August 3, 2007The Subhumans might just go down as the greatest punk band of all time. This CD sums them up pretty good too. It is great. It has all their best songs. They're missing a few great ones though. if you want more great Subhumans, check out the songs, "Religious wars", "Apathy", and "Rats". Their best song is probably "apathy". "Black and white" is the best song off this CD.
January 5, 2007 | | My favoritie album of all time
The title says it all. The album is intense, energetic, fast paced and just plain kicks butt. This is an album that EVERY punk fan should own. It catapulted my interest in punk years ago and will be a CD that will always be in my collection. I really think the Subhumans are one of the best bands of all time.
July 3, 2006 | | Over 20 Years and It still Rocks
I Bough this Album 16 years ago and still think it rocks the SubHumans stand the test of time and their political brand of Punk made them worthy inheritors of the type of Political Punk brought to the Punk mainstream by Crass. A great album and a must for any Punk Collection. If you like this album a better point of call than the Clash would be Citizen Fish, Rudimentary Peni, Conflict, Minor Threat, The germs of Flux of Pink Indians. If you prefer the Clash's style of 70's Punk try The Ruts, The Stranglers, The Lurkers, X-Ray-Specs, The Adverts of Slaughter & The Dogs.
March 29, 2006To the Clash fan: You obviously didn't read the amazingly well written, intelligent lyrics that this album's got. You have no clue what you're talking about.
Anyway. This is awesome. Very smart, very political, very hard, very fast. Any punk rock fan would enjoy this. Especially fans of Crass, Dead Kennedys, Aus-Rotten, or any other amazing political punk band. 'Mickey Mouse Is Dead' and 'Subvert City' are my favorite tracks on here. Oh, and 'No' is also a damn good song. The lyrics just...well...blow my mind, basically. I am glad these guys still tour once in a while. I gotta see 'em some time.
GET THIS ALBUM! You won't regret it.
Oh, and I'm 17, btw.
