About Ziggy Marley & the Melody Makers - Jahmekya

Before this album, Ziggy, his brother, and his sisters seemed more like a rich lady's kids than heirs to the throne of Bob Marley, the emblematic Third World Sufferah. But with their fifth LP release, an ambitious effort set in an overstuffed 16-track CD, the Marleys ably assume the burden of their legacy. Ziggy and the Melody Makers-- Stephen, Cedella, and Sharon Marley and Erica Newell--globalize and modernize roots reggae with infusions of rock & roll, funk, rap, and electronic dance music, most notably in "Good Time," an irresistible invitation to lusty dance floor abandon that showcases Cedella, Sharon, and Erica's lush, highly personalized harmonies. In "What a Conquerer's Defeat," an otherwise negligible tune, Stephen steps to the plate with a take on his dad's "ole codger" voice and gives off hints of a superb stylist in the making. --Elena Oumano Amazon.com

This is very much ahead of its time, the production is top notch, and it captures that 90's spirit of "innovation/originality" without sounding 90's pop. Fuses reggae with lots of synth sounds, without sounding overly synthetic. My favorite Ziggy Marley album! June 11, 2008

This is without a doubt, one of the greatest recordings of all time.
After 15 years of listening to this album, it still sounds fresh and new.
Very joyful and groovy... April 30, 2007

Sometimes disjointed and psychedelic like on the rapparhythmic Raw Riddim, at other times highly melodic and danceable like on the funky Kozmik, with its lovely chug-chug guitar, this album raises reggae to new heights. Wrong Right Wrong is a dreamy number that poses an interesting philosophical question in a most intriguing manner. Herbs And Spices features that guitar style again plus lashings of groovy echo and tinkerbells. Although Jahmekya does have the same sentimental thread running through and does sound much like their daddy Bob in some places, it is nevertheless highly original and rather groovy. June 10, 2001

I bought this album about a week after it was released. I thought it was good then. I didn't know I would consider it one the best albums I had ever heard ten years later. That is all that needs to be said. October 20, 2000
