Cut #3 says it all: "A Man will be a Man". Isaac Hayes, like contemporary Barry White, has the bass pipes to seduce the heartiest of women. Hayes is the master technician of romance on a disc that is expertly balanced with a powerful party jam (the fifteen-minute-plus title cut) and the remainder of the album, a collection of "bedroom ballads" that will more than likely get the female listener's attention in the most arousing of ways.

The "boys" that are populating today's R & B/hip-hop charts need to learn from one that knows exactly what women want and can convey his desires in a most passionate of musical wizardry. January 12, 2006

By 1973 Ike had quite an impressive body of work to his name. The Black Moses had rode the previous year out with two movie soundtracks: `Three Tough Guys' and `Truck Turner'. Now he was releasing `Joy', his eighth album in four years. A rolling Ike gathers no moss.

The fifteen minute title track is the killer jam here, a dark eerie beat combined with some haunting Ike vocals. However, the album isn't perfect. On `I Love You That's All' we're made to endure TWO MINUTES of Ike and his girl arriving home and pouring a few drinks. If you're still awake after that, then the instrumental if nice enough, but who knows why Ike thought the intro was a good idea, or worse still, why he thought anybody would want to hear him actually getting it on with his girl, the sounds of which are also included throughout the tune (No lie).

That misadventure aside, `A Man Will Be A Man' is a cool enough groove, `The Feeling Keeps On Coming' is an almost ominous sounding number that nearly steals the show, and the closing `I'm Gonna Make It Without You' is sweet. Throughout this album the music and production is mesmerising. A rarity these days.

This album signalled the end of Ike's term as a major player. Record label drama kept his albums from receiving the promotion they needed, but in fairness Ike's material declined after this. Ike became cool again thanks to the 70s rebirth in the mid 90s, although it didn't translate into a big figure comeback. January 18, 2004

Isaac Hayes was one of the rawest, funkiets, soul singers ever and his cd proves his legacy and he's way overlooked I mean Isaac made songs which always had a black mafia feel to it. February 12, 2003

Issac Hayes has been in my EARS for YEARS & now the simplicity and durability of CD's has made my ownership of Ike's music that much more portable I am introducing Ike to all sorts of folk. This album is a superb example of the power of words when sung & spoken with feeling Long Live IKe April 11, 1999
