Isaac proves with these 2 albums not simply that he was a genius, but more than that. He was in a class all by himself. I hate to say he was the first (because my music history only spans my 39 years) but at this time was the only artist I know of doing what is often called "orchestra soul". Even though previous reviewers gave positive feedback I question if they really "got it".

Hint: listen to the first tracks of both albums with a grain of salt. Remember the black movies of the time always had an "opener" song boasting of the main characters in an effort to define them. Then, after track one, sit back.

It is best to be riding on a long drive, or be doing something without distraction. What you get is a jump into mellow, heavily orchestrated soul/jazz/orchestra or whatever you want to call it that only Isaac was doing. Sad that he probably was limited in his commercial albums to more direct "soul" for album sales, but I bet his true passion was this music. Imagine 2 albums of songs with the complexity of "Cafe Regio" from Shaft. Need I say more? I believe Truck Turner is the more complex of the 2 but not "better" than Shaft. How do you compare 2 brilliant albums? October 2, 2007

just got my copy in the mail today.right now i'm playing "Joe Bell" after like playing 5 times already!..this set is what i call "Danceable Movie Funk" meaning that you can get on the dancefloor and groove to this music as well...and "A House Full Of Girls?".....THAT SONG IS OWNING ME..it's sensual.it's 70's( and that's not a bad thing either given that i was born a year before this came out:)....if you're a fan of the 70's soundtracks-especially of the african-american genre, RUN..DON'T WALK to buy your copy of this set. you won't be disappointed. i'm not.

This is a great purchase 2 cds for the price of one, i mean c'mon. Both these cd's mainly consist of instrumentals(the best vocal song is give it to me if I remember correctly). If you wanna get straight to the craziness then go ahead and put the cd on Red Rooster and let it play from there. "Hung up on my baby" would have to be my favorite on the first cd and "Breakthrough" on the second. The combination from "Breakthrouh" into "Now we're one" is amazing you go from intense funk into some nice groovin' jazz in a matter of seconds. Great purchase especially, because you can buy it very cheap. Enjoy. July 19, 2007

Both of the albums on this collection are winners , especially Truck Turner is SUPERIOR to Shaft.... December 14, 2006

While both of these soundtracks have a certain similarity to "Shaft" in style, they 'up' the funk somewhat, and have a less jazzy feel overall. "Trunk Turner" retains the 2LP format of "Shaft", and almost the same sequence of tracks (chase scene funk to jazzy, laid back grooves) but hits harder. "Tough Guys" is short and sweet, but works together really well, and is my favourate of the two. Go for the ACE records (UK) 24bit re-issue, with better packaging, though the sound quality is not much better (there's background 'hiss' on both of these releases). May 25, 2004
