One of the most underrated symphonists ever! His complete symphonies would add a wonderfuly beautiful collection of music to any library. If you only want one to start with then the Symphonys 1/8 from Jarvi is a must. it's top-notch, thumbs up and 5 stars (and all that stuff!)
December 31, 2000 | | Gade; a splendid Danish symphonist | |
I have the 4 CD set of Gade's complete symphonies, and they are truly splendid works of musical art. Gade was not at first recognized as a serious composer in his home country of Denmark, and it was only after Mendelssohn championed his works that he became more well-known. The symphonies are in the typical Romantic period idiom, with beautiful melodies throughout. These recordings are probably the most complete that one would be able to find; other recordings of Gade's music exist, but this set is truly a benchmark. The recordings are full digital, and the performances are first-rate. The program notes booklet states that the Stockholm Sinfonietta consists of players from three of the major Swedish orchestras in and around the capital. As indicated by my five-star rating of these recordings, they come highly recommended.
