With "Achtung," old school fans thought they got the joke - then U2 embodied its intent to finally smash the mold into irreparable pieces. Broadcast here in blaring quasi-techno Zoosound is an unprecedented message for U2: artifice really is chic. It was clear that U2 was trying to get away - but were they also trying to get one over? I mean, it says techno, but finishes like soul. Bono's falsetto seems to suck you into the truly false on "Lemon." But when the boys break it down (and out) the tune hits like blue-eyed Otis. They sneak in a brighter, larger message about weathering sardonic imagery and broken hearts, and arriving the better for it on the other side. No, musically it's not the band's strongest effort, but it takes songs of the personal to a whole other level. "Zooropa" shows to still be core U2 - not at their most shallow, but merely their most ironic.
November 29, 2008This is the best cd. The sound is brethtaking. produced by flood, the same guy who did Mellon Collie By Smashing Pumpkins....Just downright killer. Influenced by the German Discotheques they went to before the creation of this cd, it sounds phenomenal!!!! HAD IT AND HAD TO GET IT AGAIN for a friend's son....
November 11, 2008I've listened to U2:Zooropa alot.I was fourteen
watching a U2 music video of "Numb" on Beavis

flashing The Edge.
November 8, 2008Often misunderstood release which continued the pop experimental elegance found on their landmark shift AB, although with more emphasis placed around having fun instead of drama ("Stay (Faraway, So Close!)", admittedly one of the disc's most powerful tracks sounds like the only cut that could have made that previous release). Although the disc could have ended a little more triumphantly (even though the Cash song has only grown in stature), Zooropa still comes loaded with interesting production and sleek, easy-going arrangements.
September 19, 2008 | | So GOOD, but most do NOT understand... | |
This is actually U2's BEST album...it is a scathing commentary on Europe and the world...the musicality of it is top-notch, the experimentation meshed well together, and the topicality of it still rings true to this day as Europe continues to slide into oblivion (partying the night away as Islam gathers strength in the heart of Europe), even as they appear so wonderful and united on the surface...oh, and the WANDERER is the PERFECT song to cap this album, a condemnation...Mr. Cash (and by proxy, the people of the United States) hits the nail on the head with a SLEDGEHAMMER...this album sounds better today than it did when it came out 15 (fifteen!) years ago...most people then were not ready for ZOOROPA and many still are not...the title track, Numb, Lemon, Daddy's Gonna Pay for Your Crashed Car and the Wanderer are highlights...more than worth your dollar (or Euro!)
