About Nine Inch Nails - Broken

As a placeholder between the full-length Pretty Hate Machine and The Downward Spiral, Broken packs a serious punch. Angrier and less poppy than Machine, this EP is full of noisy hooks, if such a thing is possible (check out that guitar riff on the full-throttle "Wish"), and much closer aesthetically to the industrial subgenre that informs Trent Reznor's music. As song titles like "Help Me I Am in Hell" suggest, Broken is a work of undiluted rage, which is, of course, a big part of its appeal. --Genevieve Williams Amazon.com

rating: 5 The evolution of Industrial metal
The continued evolution of the Master of Industrial Music continues in a Faster, and Harder way than Pretty hate machine. The 2nd studio release from Nine Inch Nails who is really one man Trent Reznor. May 2, 2008

rating: 5 Edgy and Atmospheric
This thirty minute E.P was released by Trent Reznor after a long battle with record company troubles. His bitter anger and frustrations about the whole situation is definitely apparent on the album/EP. Reznor's music is still edgy and atmospheric in the industrial/synth/dance vein but "Broken" is more straightforward and melodic than previous Nine Inch Nails releases.

While I miss the angst of songs like "Head Like A Hole" from Pretty Hate Machine most of what you hear on "Broken" is still great. Songs like "Pinion", "Help Me I Am In Hell" and "Happiness In Slavery" have the hard pounding dance beats that are expected from Nine Inch Nails. It also includes two instrumental interludes "Wish" and "Gave Up". April 16, 2008

When my product arrived, it was shrink-wrapped, and brand new.
When i opened it, I found a BROKEN CD!!

rating: 4 Short but packs a serious punch!
Broken is the EP that serves as the bridge between Pretty Hate Machine and The Downward Spiral, and yet it really stands out as a great CD on its own. While there are still some nice grooves remniscent of Pretty Hate Machine, the sound of it is much closer to the dark, angry sound found on Spiral. This is where Trent Reznor started to get pissed, and at the time of its release, Broken really served as an accurate preview of things to come from the man.

Short and sweet, just about all the cuts here are good and at least three of them remain in the live set to this day. My only complaint is that it's just a little too short, but it's a flaw that can be easily overlooked. It is an EP afterall, and it does what an EP should do: Leaves you wanting more. So I highly recommend picking this one up especially if you loved The Downward Spiral. Enjoy! December 31, 2007

rating: 5 Perfect Chaos
This disc is perfectly chaotic. I loved it when I had it on tape and had to sit through endless silence to get to the "hidden tracks," and I love it now 15 years later. The emotion is raw, the anger is clear and the sound is tight. This is a perfect reflection of when things go to @#$%. June 2, 2007
