The 80's was such a difficult era for many artists, and very much so the decade of "one hit wonders". Europe however, may have been known for the album "Final Countdown", but the success continued and was just as great for this album released two years later.

I was delighted to see "Final Countdown" remastered, but on that same note, I'm disappointed that we are still waiting for "Out of This World" to be remastered... What are they waiting for??? Why isn't this classic album on the remaster list??? Does anybody know?

I feel that this album is very much in need of a revisit! This c.d. by itself could be a greatest hits album, because it has everything from soft rock to hard rock and a few ballads. This wasn't a sloppy production by far, and if you haven't heard this c.d. yet, you really are missing a classic album, by a classic band!

With that being said, Sony (CBS Records) Epic, or whoever has the rights to this, needs to get with the program and follow through with what they started!!!

This album is pretty close to being at the level of greatness of most of Europe's other 80s albums, but by this time Europe had already peaked in popularity with The Final Countdown and thid didn't sell a million copies in the States. Most of the camp factor is gone, as Europe takes on a heavier, more serious side which would continue through most of the 90s. In the 90s, Europe's live set lists were dominated by newer material, and this holds up well to their 90s material as well. Only someone really big on Europe or similiar hair metal would want this, which I am- trying to recover from a fat and depressed death metal phase. It's really good, trust me. July 26, 2007

Out of This World, Europe's 1988 follow-up to their smash hit The Final Countdown, is one of those albums I love to hate. It's almost as if the band saw how much their sales increased after softening both their image and their music for The Final Countdown and figured they'd do even better with an even slicker, pop-oriented approach.

Out of This World is a bright, shiny album that is utterly devoid of anything remotely resembling meaning. No ninjas or Indians this time around, only a dozen songs about love, rocking, love, rocking some more, love, and um, an airplane (were they trying to score a spot on the Iron Eagle soundtrack?). This album is literally drenched in keyboards too, and with John Norum out of the band the guitar work is just not enough to offset all of the synths.

The thing is; I actually enjoy the album quite a bit. The songs are catchy as hell, and I have to admit that Europe is a much better AOR/melodic rock band than they ever were when they played metal. I just wish they hadn't made this album quite so slick and desperately radio friendly. If you listen to their next album - Prisoners in Paradise - you can hear the band finally finding the perfect balance between rock and pop. Oh well, better late than never.

THE FINAL COUNTDOWN was an album with serious lyrics married to a slick musical background. On OUT OF THIS WORLD, the lyrics are just as serious, but the music is rawer, featuring more guitars and fewer keyboards. Ron Nevison produced this one, and his expertise shows in the way the CD sounds and flows. The ballads are harder-edged this time around, as are the rockers. Like its predecessor, as well as its followup, PRISONERS IN PARADISE, OUT OF THIS WORLD proves that Kansas-style prog and Ted Nugent metal can coexist successfully in the right hands. This is just a plainly underrated record. True, it could have used a little less production (maybe that should take one star from the rating but...), but the songs are, for the most part, amazing. Tempest's voice is at its peak, and Marcello's fretwork is amazing. His blend of melody and shredding in the tasty, finely-honed solos is something not to miss for any guitar fan. I wonder how the record would have sounded, had Nevison (producer) given a rawer edge (and a little bit more space) to Marcello's guitar. The rest of the band sounds pretty tight...although drums are a bit dull at some moments (again, blame it on Nevison!).
Being a long time fan (or "old" Europe and now of their new sound as well), I have to say that OOTW ranks among their best song-collection, if not the best.
For those into 80's melodic hard rock, this is a must. For those not into the '80s sound, check out 2004 Start from the Dark and, soon, 2006 Secret Society. October 5, 2006
