About Aerosmith - Aerosmith

While not their strongest recording, Aerosmith's self-titled debut gave a taste of the musical path that the band, and much of the rest of hard rock, was to follow for the rest of the 1970s and well into the 1980s. Although the awkward social commentary of "Movin' Out" and the swinging cover of Rufus Thomas's "Walking the Dog" have largely been forgotten, two standards emerged from Aerosmith: "Dream On," a prototypical power ballad with its keyboards and string arrangement, and "Mama Kin," which contains one of the most recognizable riffs in hard-rock history. Though Aerosmith would record better albums--both before and after their drug-induced implosion--their debut serves as a kind of road map to much of post-'60s rock & roll. --Genevieve Williams Amazon.com

Firstly Aerosmith is no classic debut and it is not the best Aerosmith album to start off your collection with. The production is thin, the band are uptight (especially noticable in Tyler's vocals).

However, there are nuggets which give us a taste of what a terrific band Aerosmith are to become. There is the rocking classic; Mama Kin and the still golden Dream On. The excellent Somebody rocks your socks off and the Yardbirds influenced One Way Street is first class and you can't stop tapping your foot to Movin Out.

This is not a great album, but is a good one and well worth a listen. February 4, 2008

A very strong debut from one of America's longest tenured rock n' roll outfits. Aerosmith plays some straight up rock on this record, that would serve as inspiration to generations of hard rock bands to come after. They haven't reached their song-writing glory days, yet, and Steven Tyler's vocals haven't quite found that fantastic screech, but all the ingredients are here for a great rock band. This is one of the finest debut albums I have heard and it was my first Aerosmith album. I wore grooves in it and love the guitar play in it and it is my third favorite Aerosmith cd (after Toys and Rocks). It also is worth while to have around in your collections. February 13, 2007

So what if the recording sounds lousy. This is the rawest most crudest and best rock & roll Aerosmith has ever done. Energy and songs is the priority over quality. I love the sound of Perry's old amp(probably a 50's Fender champ?) sound like the tubes are dying at the beginning of Somebody and they left it in for posterity! Perfect. February 3, 2007

The first album from the bad boys from Boston. Overall it is a pretty good debut. Lots of grungy blues rock that the band would perfect in years to come. The album contains the classics "Mama Kin", "Walkin The Dog", and a song I have never gotten sick of "Dream On" which IMO is the great rock power ballad of all time. The rest of the album is fairly pedestrian in its approach with songs like "Make It", "One Way Street", and "Moving Out" showing some of the early fire that would carry these guys for another 4 decades. They still usually perform at least a song or two from this album in concert today. January 25, 2007
