About Extreme - Extreme

Extreme's debut album is sometimes uneven but always fun. Van Halen influences are prominent, which is ironic given singer Gary Cherone's post-Extreme career. This album, like all of Extreme's work, is notable for Nuno Bettancourt's guitar playing, but the songs aren't bad either, mostly examining childhood from a playful but oddly mature perspective. "Kid Ego," their first single, is here, as well as "Mutha (Don't Want to Go to School Today)," "Little Girls," "Big Boys Don't Cry," and the rock-out finale "Play with Me." There are a few ballads as well: "Watching, Waiting" is particularly poignant and surprisingly spiritual in content. This album showed Extreme's considerable potential, which peaked with their second album, Pornograffitti. --Genevieve Williams Amazon.com

I think this was a pretty good album.
I even got laid while playing "Rock a bye bye" a day before joining the military. June 3, 2008

I got this album at Tower Records the day it was released. I wanted to like it because Nuno Bentencourt had a few decent guitar riffs scattered throughout, but that wasn't enought to save any of the songs. The songs were just...what's the word I'm looking for? BORING. Boring and cheesy, like the musical equivalent of a chick flick.

And worse I was reading through the liner notes and they had some anti-abortion rhetoric printed in there. Lame music AND they are against women's' rights. Geesh. If I wanted a Stryper album I would have bought one :)

I own thousands of CD's and this is one of a handful I've ever sold back. Extreme wouldn't get anymore of my money. And I recommend you save yours. If you must try this CD, then find a used copy. Better yet, check out vintage releases from Giuffria, Dream Theater (Images and Words) or Van Halen (Van Halen II)! May 25, 2008

Well this CD is a great buy. And for the user who stated "Their weakest effort" should have just saved his opinion for a Nelson album. This was their greatest effort. Unlike bands like Trixter who cared more about babes and their hair, Extreme had talent for music....I been listening to Nuno since I was a kid and love his stuff. Buy this CD and youll be happy :) May 14, 2008

This is one of meny CDs that didn't get the attention it sould have got. Every song on this CD is great. But the highlights are "Mutha", "Big Boys Don't Cry" and "Play with me". "Mutha" has an AMAZING guitar intro in the beginning. Nuno Bettencourt was influenced by Brian May and Eddie Van Halen and the cool thing about influence is that "Mutha" sounds like a mix between Brian and Eddie. Lastly Ive got to say that Nuno is a god at playing guitar. If you are a fan of hair metal and early Van Halen I am sure that you will like this CD. December 1, 2007

Debut album by big hair rockers from Boston, this little package is full of raw guitar rock suited to fit any style. Despite this taste of music being somewhat of a garage sale nostalgia nowadays, it still is something to note given some great singing by Gary Cherone and guitar playing by Nuno Bettencourt. As the pro review on this page reveals, there were Van Halen influences and that was not a bad thing when Extreme entered the picture. Little Girls, Play with Me and Mother don't wanna go to school today are all fun and user friendly. No quite their best but for a debut album it still remains a great one to me. July 30, 2007
