About Metallica - Master of Puppets

One of the defining albums of thrash metal, Master of Puppets is arguably Metallica's best album (as well as their last with bassist Cliff Burton). Focusing on the concept of power and abuses thereof, this is a collection of complex, intelligent music, played at about a hundred miles an hour. Not that these are short songs; this eight-song album clocks in at over an hour, which makes it all the more impressive that not one moment on this recording is boring. In tackling various approaches to their subject, Metallica is insightful lyrically as well as musically: "Welcome Home (Sanitarium)" is from the point of view of an institutionalized inmate and "Disposable Heroes" is the perspective of a soldier. If all you've heard of Metallica is what's been on the radio recently, check this one out. You're in for a surprise. --Genevieve Williams Amazon.com essential recording

"Master" was supposed to be a birthday gift from my girlfriend who had previously told me that she didn't like Metallica. Well she and some friends had been to Salt Lake City and my gf (ex) got this album while they were there and for some reason they decided to listen to it on the way back to Pocatello. I found this disconcerting especially since she didn't even have the courtesy to rewind the cassette before giving it to me. I had to ask. She and her friends LOVED it! I let it go since I was jonesing to listen to this new Metallica album. I was melted butter after listening to the first 2 songs. After that I was on a tropical Metallica island and all was good.
Master of Puppets is so good that "anyone" would have a difficult time dismissing its alluring power and awe. If you like Country, Rap, R&B, Disco, Pop, Classical, etc... you would be selling yourself short if you don't have this album in your musical collection. A true masterpiece.

rating: 5 I want old Metallica back!
Old Metallica, please come back. Your new stuff sucks! Your new stuff has sucked for 17 years. I want back the Motorbreath Metallica. I want to bang my head again, not caress myself to love songs. If I want to listen to that, I would listen to the red hot chili peppers. April 3, 2008
