About David Crosby - If I Could Only Remember My Name

Thanks to his much-publicized personal travails, it's easy to overlook the multiple talents that originally made Crosby a star in his days with The Byrds and Crosby, Stills and Nash. This, his first solo effort, was recorded in 1971 (following Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young's Deja Vu) and contains some of his most impressive vocal and songwriting work, including the haunting "Laughing," the mantra-like "Music Is Love," and the extended, impressionistic "Cowboy Movie." With guest appearances by such famous friends as Neil Young, Joni Mitchell, Grace Slick, and Jerry Garcia, it's a fascinating chapter in an always-interesting career that's all too often been overshadowed by headlines. --Scott Schinder Amazon.com

Just go ahead and purchase this, then open a window, light up some incense, turn the lights down low, play this music, and let the sounds and aromas drift outside and circle the globe.

In a monumental career that has spanned four decades, David Crosby was never better than on his debut solo album, If I Could Only Remember My Name. Not with the Byrds, Not with CSN, not with CSN&Y, not with CPR. Though all of those configurations have produced wonderful moments and consequent legendary status, Crosby himself has never shown so brightly as he does here. His story telling ability showcased in Cowboy Movie, a thinly disguised tale of the ill fated CSNY tour is a riot to decipher. His ode to music, Music is Love featuring a waif like vocal from Neil Young, His glorious vocals on songs like Song With No Name, Tree With No Leaves or Orleans, this record demonstrated all that was and is great about David Crosby. Such a shame that drug abuse stifled this wonderful talent for so long.

If anybody ever wants to know what the aura of San Francisco was in the late sixties, go no farther than this wonderful record. March 9, 2008

As Grace Slick one said:"You have heard all the Heavy Groups, now it's time for morning mania music". David Crosby's first solo effort was originally panned by the rock music press- but it stands up very well today. David always had an ear for lush, breathtaking harmony (see CSNY)and it shines (although at times inconsistant)on this recording. "Traction In The Rain" is a personal fav.
The cover image is bitter/sweet, a homage for his lost Lady Christine, and his love of the sea. A watermark album of the early 1970's. December 21, 2007

This was one of those albums that from the moment I put it on the turntable many years ago, I was hooked for life. It was mesmerizing! For some reason, it fell into obscurity until recently when it was finally put out on CD. I urge anyone out there to pick this up and give it a listen. An amazing talented gathering of the who's who in the late 60's SF, and a master in David Crosby to bring them all together and record some of his most brilliant music! December 3, 2007

I picked this record up because it was ridiculously cheap, .79 cents at the local goodwill. I honestly wasn't expecting much considering it was just in some heap of records. But this record is terrific, wonderful vocals and some really righteous guitar work. If your looking for a vinyl masterpiece this ought to be your choice. i don't know how it sounds digitally, but i'd have to recommend you get yourself a record player and throw this on immediately.
