This album is one of my favorite of Stevie's...Belladonna has better songs and Wild Heart is euphoric in its intentions...but this album was a summer staple on sun-kissed afternoons at the beach and cruising on balmy summer nights down the boulevard, being 18 and carefree... If I were you is my fave,Talk to me and I can't wait are a close tie for second but whole album minus The Nightmare(still HATE this song)rates as terrific (especially given the coke addled time in Stevie's precious life). This album would get five stars if both Reconsider Me and Thousand Days were included as planned and I would love to hear the first album of "dark" songs recorded for this album but ultimately shelved for this group of very good songs. If you weren't around when this was first released,I'm sorry but try it now and let it's charms enchant you today! April 21, 2008

Well would you just look at how cute that album cover is.Well mabe thats why I purchaced it?What a surprise to hear what she has in there for us,she never fails to deliver.I don`t want to plant any seeds to spoil your fun,but there is one song I can`t get thu without the tears.Alright I will tell you which one it is,it is number 9 and the title is ,If I were you.The whole album is unexplainable because I don`t think they have invented a word to decribe it,I don`t want to use the word supernatural,it is so creative it`s so close to supernatural,it`s like a near supernatural experience each time I listen to it.Christmass is coming and if I didn`t have this Rock a Little album and someone gave it to me I would have to say it would be the best gift of all.For all you gift givers and Music is somthing you are considering,Stevie Nicks Rock a Little is an excellent purchace with no regrets.~Peace Glenna MacDonald~ November 11, 2007

With Fleetwood Mac's future in question, Stevie Nicks forged on with her solo career. She was clearly the most successful Mac solo artist. For example, either of her first two efforts (Bella Donna or The Wild Heart) matched the combined sales of all five other Mac solo efforts released by this time (two from Mick Fleetwood, two grating efforts from critic's darling Lindsey Buckingham, and one rather predictable offering from hit machine/songbird Christine McVie).

Nicks' success was largely due to the fact that she made her bandmates look like they were standing still. While Buckingham recycled his Tusk eccentricities and McVie continued making pure pop magic, Rock a Little found Nicks experimenting with new sounds. Notably, she completely embraced the synth-pop style of the mid 80s, as well as welcomed new producers and musicians. Although the changes suit her style very well, there's definitely a more trendy sound to Rock a Little. As a result, it hasn't aged as well as her first two albums.

Taken for what it is, Rock a Little is an outstanding effort to blend Nicks' poetic drama with the synthesizer age. "Talk to Me" and "I Can't Wait" were big hits, although Nicks was not the primary writer on either track. In fact, she only wrote three songs by herself, a major change from The Wild Heart and Bella Donna, where she pretty much wrote everything. The smaller role for her songwriting immediately makes Rock a Little less compelling. Vocally, however, she's as impressive as ever.

Beyond the hits, "Sister Honey" and "If I Were You" show Nicks bending her new soundscape to fit her needs. On the other hand, she's swallowed up in the over-production of "The Nightmare." Further, the record is harmed by some lyrics that are oblique even for Stevie Nicks, and there's a general lack of musical focus ("Imperial Hotel" seems to have wandered in from some Tom Petty album). Ultimately, however, Nicks closes things on a powerful note. "Has Anyone Ever Written Anything For You" is one of her most beautiful ballads.

Rock a Little is not a classic, but it is a great album. Even so, the pace of her dual career was clearly starting to take its toll. June 27, 2006
