July 8, 2008Standout tracks: WHEN IN LOVE, EYES ARE THE SOUL(deep), SEARCH 4 THE LYTE, ACT LIKE YOU KNOW, POOR GEORGIE(had a profound effect on me), TAKE IT OFF(tasteful sex record), BIG BAD SISTER, KAMIKAZE, K-ROCK'S THE MAN, LOLA FROM COPA etc. Filler NONE! Bottom line: Mc Lyte is one of the best things that happened to hip hop and this album is proof of that. Like the albums that came before she continues to surprise you with her skills on songs like Kamikaze and Big Bad Sister while giving you songs of substance like Lola From Copa, Eyes are the soul(story of a crack addict and teenage mother) and Poor Georgie which is a story of a player that Lyte was in a relationship with who dies of a drunk driving accident. Even though she has a sex record on here(Take It Off) her sex records are tasteful and enjoyable and not over the top gross like the garbage you hear from bombastic idiots unworthy of mention here. Its unfortunate that The respect that Mc Lyte, Queen Latifah, Salt&Pepa generated for the fairer sex in the rap game is destroyed by clumsy and cocky rap hookers. All in all this album is definetely a masterpiece that should be added to your collection.
October 16, 2006She's inarguably the most hardcore female MC and one of the greatest MCs of all time. Even though this album is more softer than Aint No Other, her skills are clearly evident. "Poor Georgie", "Eyes Are The Soul", "When In Love" She's definitely real true. METAPHORIC is what the LYTE is all about. She's definitely better than most MCs and the only lady who is that good is Lauryn.
July 10, 2004I have been a fan of MC Lyte from the start. She is a true hardcore rapper. A super smooth voice and a rock hard flow that will leave you begging to hear more. 'Act Like You Know' is a musical masterpiece of high quality flows coupled with ultrafunky beats that stay on your mind. This is a rapper who, like the finest wine, will only get better and better with time. 'Can You Dig It' gives us a prime example of how talented MC Lyte is. The bass alone in this track is enough to make it legendary, let alone MC Lyte's supertight rhymes. 'Mickey Slipper' is an interlude that is so funky: you wish it were longer. 'Eyes Are The Soul' is a retro-jam with great instrumentals. 'Kamikaze' is laser sharp with the rhymes and the beats. Every track is superbly executed. Buy this album.
