Holy Crap I've been getting into LZ alot lately...You know I was to young when they were at there peak and grew up in a Beatles/GratefulDead Family..Just recently bought the box set and The first 7 albums are all great minus some eh songs on Presence. But I threw this on and I almosted puked! Thats all I have to say, Don't buy unless you need every Zepp Album. : ) June 28, 2008

What Happened?

Zep went soft and sappy for their studio finale. "In the Evening" and ""Im Gonna Crawl" are okay, but the rest...blech! June 9, 2008

Zeppelin's comeback album which became their swan song still sounds great nearly 30 years on

English hard rockers Led Zeppelin released their eighth and final studio album In Through the Out Door in August of 1979.
The album was the band's first album in over THREE YEARS (which, by 1979 standards, was a long wait) since the March, 1976 release of the chart-topping Presence.
Alot happened in the three years, disco became huge whilst punk and new wave were happening underground and arena rock and hard rock/metal bands like KISS, Foreigner, Styx and Ted Nugent were keeping rock alive in the mainstream here in the States. In Zeppelin land, tragedies struck in 1977. First, manager Peter Grant was going through a divorce. Guitarist Jimmy Page began having drug problems. Then in July, Grant, drummer John Bonham and two other members of Zep's entourage were arrested for beating a security officer. Then, lead singer Robert Plant's young son Karac had died suddenly from a stomach infection therefore curtailing Zep's US tour.
The band went into an uncertain period where Page and Bonham were dealing with demons and Plant was still grieving whilst bass player John Paul Jones (who was unscathed in the disasters) retired to his family. Then, the band went to Sweden in November, 1978 to start work on ITTOD which would be the last album Zep would release as an active band. For the album, a revitalized Plant (whom was about to become a dad again as son Logan would be born during ITTOD's mixing sessions in January of 1979) and Jones were the album's musical forces while Page did co-write many of the songs and produced the album despite his heroin troubles and Bonham played well considering his alcohol intake. Would this album be another Zep classic or would it be a dud, read on and find out (as I did when I first got this album on cassette in November of 1985 when I was 9).
All of the tracks were penned by Page/Plant/Jones except as noted.
The opening "In The Evening" is a killer opener. Droning synthesizers, violin bowed guitars and tympani's start this track. After the intro, it becomes a classic rocker, featuring some fine guitar work by Page and Bonzo's killer drumming. Next is "South Bound Suarez", a bluesy shuffle rocker with some great piano work from Jonesy. Next is the album's US Top 30 hit "Fool In The Rain". This track got the most airplay on rock radio when released and the band used Caribbean flavorings in this track's middle section to a great extent. The first side ended with the English doing a classic original hoedown track called "Hot Dog" written by Page and Plant. Page's country-ish picking riff and Plant's Elvis-type vocal delivery make this track a standout.
The album's second side kicked off with the almost 11 minute epic Carouselambra. Jonesy's synthesizer intro morphs into a fall out rocker with some great guitar playing by Pagey (he used his Gibson doubleneck on this track). The track rocks out then slows a bit then picks up the pace and the song is just stellar. The next track is "All My Love" (written by Jones and Plant). Plant wrote the song after his first son Karac's death and was a great tribute to him. Jonesy's keyboards on the track were superb and Page's guitar work here is beautiful. The closing "I'm Gonna Crawl" is a great album closer. The synthesizer intro is beautiful before turning into a classic blues featuring great bluesy vocals from Plant, and some marvelous interplay between the bass guitar and drums. Page's guitar solo is blues at its finest. The song ends with some passioned singing and screaming from Plant and the crescendo to the end was amazing.
When ITTOD was finally released (with a paper bag concealing one of the six different album sleeves), disco was on its way out and New Wave went back underground (for awhile) as the album became the first album in history for a ROCK BAND to debut at #1 on Billboard's Album Charts in late August of 1979 and stayed for eight weeks and sold a stellar 3 million copies in its first five days according to Atlantic Records (the band's US distributor). To date it has sold 7 million Stateside.
Sadly, this was the band's last album as drummer John Bonham died in September of 1980 after a night of heavy drinking and the band broke up after his death as his drumming was irreplaceable.

THIS ALBUM IS EVERY BIT AS GOOD AS THE REST OF ZEPPELIN. SO IT NOT THE REGULAR ZEPPELIN SOUND. IT SHOW THEY HAVE GOT TALENT TO DO ANYTHING OR ANY KIND OF MUSIC THEY WANTED TO DO BECAUSE THEY ARE,AM,ALWAYS WILL BE A FANTASTIC BAND WITH THE BRASS BALLS TO DO IT ANYWAY THEY WANT TO.
THIS IS FOR THE "zep" HEADS. HOW MANY DIFFERENT ALBUM COVERS WHERE RELEASED UNDER THE PAPER BAG? ANY GUESSES, I KNOW BECAUSE I'VE GOT THEM ALL! April 16, 2008
