This album is worth the money for just The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald, in my opinion. However, the rest of the album is not to be underestimated. It's a great easy-going album which doesn't have any offensive tunes on it. This is a great background music album to play for a group of friends to sit around and enjoy some good conversation and wine!

I bought this because "The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald" runs through my head from time to time, and I thought it was about time to own it. I found an entire CD of wonderful songs from a gifted songwriter; I play it a lot. If you like Lightfoot, this is a must have; if you don't know who he is--we're reaching all the way back to the (gasp) 70s here--this is a good introduction. It's not only a way to meet a solid talent, but to get a "feel" for the type of music that was popular in that era. A solid value and great listening.
November 29, 2007This is Gordon Lightfoot at his best. The obvious appeal to most new listeners will be the hit The Wreck Of The Edmund Fitzgerald. The album is full of wonderful songs that were overshadowed at the time. 'I'm Not Supposed To Care' is one of the best lost love songs ever. For me, the best of the album is 'Spanish Moss'. Just give this one a chance..you will not be disappointed.

Having Lived on The Big Lake (Superior) all my life, I remember the day The Edmund Fitzgerald sank, and since one of the lost 29 crewmen was from my home town,it was big news on our local AM radio Station-- Equally as powerful, I remember when Mr. Lightfoot's ballad remembering these men debuted. It was as powerful as the feeling I got when I heard of the sinking of the ship. The music brought tears to my eyes as I remembered the day of the epic storm. I received this album (yes vinyl)as a gift when it debuted in 1976 simply for the song about the Fitz-- then I listened to the whole thing--
Every song on the album has lyrics that just speak to me. The House You Live In, is good advice for us all. Race Among the Ruins ---"if you plan to face tomorrow do it soon, is a good warning- I could come up with something for every song. It just spoke to me, and from there I knew that I was hooked on the writings and sounds of Gordon Lightfoot.
He truly goes to my Top 5 favorite artists, although a completely different genre, but right up there with old "Slow Hand" himself, Eric Clapton!
Disco be damned, I was never sucked into the Dance Craze, I always enjoy great talent, and Mr. Lightfoot has it. I've stepped back in time 31 years by adding this to my CD collection!

Like many albums in my collection, I originally had this title on cassette before recently purchasing the CD version. This is Lightfoot's twelfth album overall. Replete with drums and electric guitars, this album has a more pop oriented sound to it. It's a nice mix of upbeat songs like "Race Among The Ruins" and gentle ballads like "Protocol". The big hit off the album of course was "The Wreck Of The Edmund Fitzgerald"- peaking at #2. It's about an ore carrier that sank in Lake Superior during a storm on 11/10/75 taking a crew of 29 with it. The ship's bell was recovered in 1995. There isn't a track to really single out because I enjoyed the entire album from start to finish. It runs just under 38 minutes. If you liked any of his previous albums then this will be a great addition. It ranks right up there with "If You Could Read My Mind" and "Sundown".
