| A PARTY CLASSIC |
| Maybe the best from ZZ Top? |
The Deguello album may be considered a peak performance by this legendary Texas blues-rock group. It contains such classic songs as "I thank you", "She loves my automobile", "Fool for your stockings", "Cheap sunglasses", and several more. Different from previous albums, Deguello introduced a landwinning new kind of production, taking traditional blues and rock to higher and much more interesting levels. Many old and new fans say that Deguello is the Best of ZZ Top. I am certainly inclined to agree. Guitarist Billy Gibbons' inspired vocals and raw-elegant guitar style with a genuine blues feeling in the numerous solos is greatly matched by the work of the rythm section (Dusty Hill and Frank Beard). Some think that blues may be dull or repetetive in its basic structures, but the arrangements of all songs on Deguello prove in every single instance, that this is a grave misconception. I recommend Deguello to all music lovers out there, who want to explore groudbreaking blues-rock in its finest form. May 22, 2008

But, for some reason, cool just came to the forefront on this album. The opening cover tune "I Thank You", written by Hayes & Porter, just jumped out of the speakers. It's probably the best cover they recorded. But the personality & the cool of Z Z Top would blossom on the songs "I'm Bad, I'm Nationwide" & "Cheap Sunglasses". These simply epitomized the cool of Top. We're also treated to "A Fool For Your Stockings" which is an outstanding example of Z Z Top's brand of Texas/blues-rock. An odd but entertaining song is "Manic Mechanic". The rest of the album is filler which is why I rate it below Tres Hombres, Deguello is not as consistent.
Z Z Top is a tight little band from Texas, Billy Gibbons deserves more recognition for his guitar skills. No, he's not as flashy as some, but he's got his chops down & plays some of the best leads in rock. It's with this album that Z Z Top began to develop much of their personna; more development would occur with El Loco & then would fully blossom on Eliminator. April 8, 2008
