About Dolly Parton, Emmylou Harris, Linda Ronstadt - Trio

"Appalachia circa 1907" is the way they described it in the postgame interviews. It wasn't, of course, but it was as close as you could come in 1987 and still hope to sell the million copies that this ended up selling. The "Three Tenors" of country music juggle leads, complement each other to often haunting effect, and subjugate their egos to a greater cause. The songs run the gamut from primordial country favorites like "Rosewood Casket" and "Hobo's Meditation," to '50s pop (a rather anomalous "To Know Him Is to Love Him"), and mainstream country. The instrumentation is restrained, the vocals are unfailingly lovely, and the result is a trio that is more than the sum of its parts. --Colin Escott Amazon.com essential recording

rating: 5 An old favorite, glad to have found it again
This was one of the very first CDs I ever owned. My parents bought it for me when it first was released back in 1987, when I was just a kid. I misplaced it several years ago, and on a whim, recently purchased the MP3 version.

I had forgotten just how good this record is. As a musician, I do listen to a lot of different aspects of any given recording - the musicianship, the arrangements, the mixing, the mastering, etc. "Trio" is excellent on all levels. Very tasteful selection of material, arranged in a way that really augments what each of these three talented singers bring to the table, beautiful equalization and levels, etc. It is one of those records that actually sounds _better_ than if I was hearing it live!

"Telling Me Lies," "Those Memories of You," and "Wildflowers" are my favorites here, but every track is strong.

Highly recommended! April 6, 2008

rating: 5 Old fashioned harmony
Three of the most uniquely beautiful female voices comprise a musical
project that everyone who loves music will enjoy. The songs selected for this album are hauntingly rendored and you will find yourself hummimg
them for days after hearing Dolly, Linda and Emmy Lou's renditions.
A must for lovers of harmony. February 14, 2008

rating: 3 Not What I Expected
This CD was a bit of a disappointment to me although the three singers are excellent. I didn't particularly care for most of the music. I had heard somewhere along the way that this CD - "Trio" was supposed to be outstanding. I really didn't think so

rating: 5 Country Western Ladies of Note
When these ladies bring their prodigious talents together, the result is nothing short of an extraordinary experience. Each brings her own brand of musical expression, which is quite different from those of the others; one would think that they would have to stay separate -- au contraire!! What a treat is this offering - that really cannot be copycatted (pardon the pun). I heartily recommend this for anyone who likes the country and bluegrass and western and country-western varieties of music. August 26, 2007

rating: 5 PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE - Anniversary release????
It goes without saying this is a classic recording and is mentioned numorous times in articles and reviews comparing other recordings to it. I haven't heard any rumors but it would be fitting if Rhino planned a 20th Anniversary deluxe release - remastered and expanded to 2 discs. Trio definitely qualifies as an obvious choice for a new remastered release. I can only hope it is being kept a secret given the little advance information given out for most Rhino releases - the upcoming Emmylou rarities box set included. May 23, 2007
