Average user review:| Rumor Has It that this is a big 5 star masterpiece! |
I know it's a new sound, a new direction, but you can't expect anyone to keep doing the same thing year after year. They have to progress, and change with the times. That's called growing. You can't expect someone to stagnate and stay stuck in a time warp. This era of her career demonstrated real growth and it paved the way for her mega future success For My Broken Heart and the successes thereafter.
When is this going to be reissued? They've unbelievably reissued It's Your Call of all things. How could they reissue that and not this?
This is her 2nd album to go platinum within 5 months. Her first platinum album to be given that credit is Greatest Hits which took about one and a half years. Now, that's a good indication of its stellar magnitude. 3 million copies sold speaks volumes. November 12, 2007
| Question the1 and 2 star reviews this CD received over a short time period |
However, the true gems here are Now You Tell Me--along the same line of her prior hit, One Promise Too Late. But the last two tracks are my favorites from the album-- You Remember Me and That's All She Wrote. While the former has a sentimentel side and is probably one of Reba's best vocal performances, the latter is just a fun umtempo song. While this is not "traditional" country, this is nonetheless some of Reba's best music. In fact, Reba indicated that she went through a lot of material while picking songs for this album because she was pregnant during this period.
Unfortunately, this was the last release prior to Reba losing her band in a plane crash. While this album's successor, For My Broken Heart, is considered by many, including me, to be Reba's best album, Rumor Has It also ranks right up there. If you buy this album, you won't be disappointed. September 19, 2007
| Forgive Me For What I Do |
EVER
Yes, and if you even know this song and love it, you know I'm right. For those who don't know, "Fancy," is a song where Reba plays the 'role' of "Fancy," a teenage girl who gets sold by her mother to become a teenage prostitute, with the opportunity to "make it," unlike her mother.
Anyways, so Fancy whores it up and become a classy, rich mutha, wearing mink and just generally being classy. And in the end, she says that she'll never forget her upbringings.
But, instead of my smoked out self trying to explain it - read the amazing lyrics for yourself, provided by me. After reading, and hopefully listening to the song for yourself, you'll love it more than ever.
Okay, here we go:

FANCY
performed by Reba McEntire
I remember it all very well lookin' back
It was the summer I turned eighteen
We lived in a one room, rundown shack
On the outskirts of New Orleans
We didn't have money for food or rent
To say the least we were hard pressed
Then mama spent every last penny we had
To buy me a dancin' dress
Well, Mama washed and combed and curled my hair
And then she painted my eyes and lips (LIPS!)
Then I stepped into a satin dancin' dress that had a split on the side clean up to my hip
It was red velvet trimmin' and it fit me good
Standin' back from the lookin' glass
There stood a woman where a half gown kid had stood
She said, "Here's your one chance, Fancy, don't let me down,"
She said, "Here's your one chance, Fancy, don't let me down."
Mama dabbed a little bit of perfume on my neck
Then she kissed my cheek
And then I saw the tears wellin' up in her troubled eyes
As she started to speak
She looked at our pitiful shack
And then she looked at me and took a ragged breath
She said, "Your Pa's runned off and I'm real sick
And the baby's gonna starve to death."
She handed me a heart shaped locket that said,
"To thine own self be true,"
And I shivered as I watched a roach crawl across
The tow of my high heel shoe
It sounded like somebody else that was talkin'
Askin', "Mama, what do I do?"
She said, "Just be nice to the gentlemen, Fancy,
They'll be nice to you."
She said, "Here's your chance, Fancy, don't let me down,
Here's your one chance, Fancy, don't let me down
Lord, forgive me for what I do, but if you want out
Well it's up to you
Now don't let me down now
Your Mama's gonna move you uptown."
Well, that was the last time I saw my Mama
And I left that rickety shack
The welfare people came and took the baby
Mama died and I ain't been back
But the wheels of fate had started to turn
And for me there was no way out
Wasn't very long till I knew exactly
What my Mama'd been talkin' about
I knew what I had to do and I made myself this solemn vow
"I's gonna be a lady someday,"
Though I don't know when or how
But I couldn't see spendin' the rest of my life
With my head hung down in shame
You know I mighta been born just plain white trash
But Fancy was-a-my name
She said, "Here's your one chance, Fancy, don't let me down,"
She said, "Here's your one chance, Fancy, don't let me down."
It wasn't long after a benevolent man
Took-a-me in off the streets
One week later I was pourin' his tea
In a five room hotel suite
(YES SHE WAS)
I charmed a king, a congressman
And the occasional aristocrat
And then I got me a Georgia mansion
And an elegant New York townhouse flat
And I ain't done bad
(SHE AIN'T DONE BAD)
Now in this world there's a lotta self-righteous hipocryrites
They call me bad (BAD)
And criticize Mama for turning me out
No matter how little we had
But though I ain't had to worry about nothin'
For now, oh, fifteen years
Well I can still hear the desperation in my poor
Mama's voice ringin' in my ears
"Here's your one chance, Fancy, don't let me down,"
Whoa, "Here's your one chance, Fancy, don't let me down
Lord, forgive me for what I do (DO), but if you want out
Well it's up to you
Now don't let me down, hon
Your Mama's gonna move you uptown."
Oh and I guess she did.
