I am not the biggest fan of rock and roll from the 1950's. Even though this is the era that I guess everyone should appricate since Rock was invented during this time, most of the music was just a bit to simplistic and bubble gum for my taste. Yes Elvis is still loved today, but many artist from that time peroid are starting to fade, as radio has pretty much dumped fifites rock and golden oldies from playlist. In fact most of the golden oldies stations are starting in the late 60's now, and with the music of the past fading, its harder for new generations of teens and young adults to have access rock's golden age. Buddy Holly should be in any rock fans collection, not to mention those that like country and blues. Buddy had incorporated all those types of music into rock, which even though rock was a extension of jazz, I consider Buddy's music at least fifteen years ahead of its time. Not only was Buddy good, but the backing band, "The Crickets" were excellent musicians all well. Jerry Allison, was tearing up the skins unlike any other drummer that I had heard in rock during the 50's. In fact, Allison might have been the first to really incorporate more "technical" drumming into rock, and I think he stacks right up there with Moon, Bonzo, and Peart. This CD shows some of Buddy's best, and I cant stress enough how much this should be in every rock fans collection. Buddy's long gone, but his music is still here, and its still outstanding today, even with all the technical changes music has been thorough since these recordings. ENJOY

I guess this review is more of a rememberance about Buddy Holly than a critique of his music. What else could I or anyone else add that already hasn't been said? If I could have given this collection 10 Stars, it would still seem insufficient.
I always listen to this collection with bittersweet enjoyment. I was a just kid when Buddy was popular, but I can remember my friends and I snapping our fingers and wiggling our rear ends as we sang along and attempted to dance to these tunes. I can remember my parents putting the records on the hi-fi and dancing to "True Love Ways" in our living room, and I remember that February day 1959 when it was announced on the news that Buddy, Ritchie, and the Big Bopper were no more. I remember how sick I felt, and although I wish it weren't so, I can get sad today when I listen to these songs and think about Clear Lake, Iowa and the brilliant music that came to an end that day.
But, sadness aside, it's all the more reason to listen to this great collection. What on earth would music have been like without Buddy Holly? Several other reviewers have said it before me, but let me say it again, Elvis notwithstanding, Buddy Holly WAS AND IS the King of Rock and Roll. Listen, really listen to his music and you will see why...

There are a lot of tracks on this two disc collection, yet not a single dud... BUDDY always surprises, not just with his natural songwriting ability, but also with his remarkably presaging productions and wonderful song selections !! No one who loves music will be bored or sorry with this superb collection. Put it on and you won't want to take it off. I think BUDDY deserves an even better collection, and there may be more in the vaults, but I must exclaim the variety of songs and productions, plus the consistent quality of the material, is astounding! At turns, raw and rockin', sentimental, enlightening, remarkably tuneful... Right now, the best BUDDY HOLLY release available though other reviewers, even more eagerly waiting, hawk at BUDDY HOLLY GOLD (released Oct 2005) for being nothing more than a re-release of this set. BUDDY HOLLY GOLD is much cheaper than this set, and remastered, so if all the tracks are included... who'd complain? However, my own copy is this '93 release, and my review is based upon the quality of the source tapes, the sound, and most of all the huge number of recordings (50) on this fantastic collection.

Low stars for overpricing this CD when you can buy the same CD titled Buddy Holly "Gold" for a fraction of the price.
Another example of corporate greed.

I am amazed at how good this LP is. No wonder The Beatles and The Stones were influenced amongst many others. If you are a fan of music. Buy this Very Long Play.
