This has been in my collection since it was released in the late '80s and still represents well-nigh definitive (there's that word I hate using!) one-stop shopping for the many compactly composed orchestral gems of Samuel Barber. Quibbles can be made here or there concerning tempos, phrasing, and balances; but all are performed with a fine grasp of Barber's distinctly 20th century American idiom. Returning to it this morning, my main complaint has to do with the sound quality which could certainly do with a "refurbishing"; I'm wondering if such was effected on the recent EMI Gemini release in which these performances are included (Barber: Adagio for Strings; Violin Concerto; Orchestral & Chamber Works). As to the performances; the brass, winds, and percussion make themselves effectively heard and felt; but the otherwise fine strings are often noticeably underpowered. I found myself wishing to hear these performed with the likes of the Berlin Philharmonic...for shame! January 2, 2009

Longest Adagio, I have ever heard. Endless. Perfect for funerals.
The rest is average to say the least. August 29, 2008

After blank looks from the staff in High Street record shops I went to Amazon and found the music I was looking for immediately.
It was simple to purchase and it arrived very quickly. So no contest!
The music is fantastic.
Thank you Amazon.

Much better than the Zinman disk in my view. Buy it for the Adagio. Love it for all of the pieces. Gorgeous! October 31, 2006

THis CD is worth 10 times its weight in gold. Just get it, get it now, before you have to hear a minute more bad music.

It'll play in your head for the rest of your life.

What a great investment in your mind.

Have you bought it yet? July 27, 2004
