About Angelfish - Angelfish

Shirley Manson (now of Garbage) could be the perkier kid sister of Siouxsie Sioux on, "Suffocate Me," then masquerade as vintage Deborah Harry on, "King of the World." Producers (and Talking Heads alumni) Chris Frantz and Tina Weymouth are along for extra period authenticity. --Jeff Bateman Amazon.com

I came across this album by accident when I heard the track "Sleep with Me". What an incredibly moving song! The lyrics expressed by Shirley Manson's vocals captured all of the emotions of a couple breaking-up and the confusion of see each other again. I never grow tiered of listening to it. July 20, 2008

Little-known album by the little-known Angelfish, which is nonetheless one of the best bands of the 90's.

I'm not that fond of "Suffocate Me", a *serious* downer song, but there are many high points:

"King of the World" is catchy even though it seems to be sung with a certain Scottish sullenness! It is the nearest thing you will find to an upbeat song on this very dark album.

"The Sun Won't Shine" creates majestic sonic and emotional space... fine turns and touches.

"Mummy Can't Drive" has plenty of drive, building through the end with hair-raising goth breaks!

"Tomorrow Forever" is a sad, somewhat bitter goodbye song, which then decides to cut loose with a rip and rocks out the door.

"You Can Love Her" is a magnificent cover of Holly Beth Vincent's great masterpiece, and Shirley does some of her best work on this deep, powerful song. April 5, 2008

I put off buying this for ages. I just wasn't sure I'd like it. I love Garbage and was aprehensive about the possibility of being dissapointed by Manson's freshman band...however I was pleasantly surprised! I love it! It's different than Garbage, but just as grand! Buy used, buy now! April 3, 2008

I found this CD after being a Garbage fan for some time. Angelfish strikes me as sort of a stripped down, raw prequel to what we would hear from Shirley Manson later on with Garbage. Standout tracks include "King Of The World", "Dogs In A Cage" and "Heartbreak To Hate". "Suffocate Me" is a nice companion track to later effort "#1 Crush" (Absolute Garbage), a track that takes obsession to a whole new level.

Early Shirley, and highly recommended for longtime fans. March 26, 2008

Angelfish's one album is certainly a servicable early 90's goth-pop-rock album, mainly because of the stunning vocals of soon to be Garbage frontwoman and rock-n-roll icon Shirley Manson. The traces of Angelfish's new wave roots are clearly heard throughout, and certainly The Pretenders and Patti Smith are obvious influences on particular tracks. In the end, it's easy to see that the band was reshuffled from it's previous incarnation (Goodbye Mr. MacKenzie) not only in an attempt to showcase the talent of Manson, but capitalize on a new trend in music. The songs lack a soul and spirit. But they at least provide a vocal blueprint for the type of memorable music that Shirley would go on to make with her fellow members of Garbage. March 25, 2008
