About Liza Minnelli - Liza Minnelli at Carnegie Hall
Classic Liza. This compilation of a three-week 1987 engagement at Carnegie Hall, site of her mother's 1961 triumph, captures Minnelli at the height of her powers. The 100-minute program includes old standards ("Alexander's Ragtime Band," "Love Is Here to Stay"), modern pop ("Somewhere Out There"), and of course her great signature tunes: "Some People," "Liza with a Z," "Mein Herr," "Money, Money," "Maybe This Time," "Cabaret," and "New York, New York." Before a highly sympathetic audience, she also provides some warm and slightly self-deprecating commentary about her past difficulties and a brief remembrance of her father, Vincente. If you must, a one-disc highlights version is also available. --David Horiuchi Amazon.com essential recording

Any one who is a Liza fan is going to be disappointed in how uneven this recording is. You simply do not get the power of her voice and even worse, the level of the sound is uneven prohbiting a turn up of the volume from being a solution. It is hard to imagine that the album producers for such a major star would let such a poor quality recording be issued. It's like listening to a concert from the lobby. No wonder so many used versions are for sale. It is a shame cause the song selection may be the best from any of those existing and it was recorded whn Liza was still @ the peak of her abilities.
December 31, 2007Back in 1987 I attended 2 performances of Liza's show at Carnegie Hall. One was on closing night. I remember fans waiting at the box office hoping for cancellations. Scalpers were having a field day, some getting arrested! Liza's perfomances were brilliant. Pure singing, and never sounding better. I also remember at the end of the last show, she did an encore of Shine On Harvest Moon, and then the audience, going wild, were yelling for her to make a speech, which she did. Despite some technical flaws, this is Liza's best live recording. She deserved a Best Female Vocalist Grammy nomination. It was a robbery that she didn't get one.
December 17, 2007The reason the album LIZA AT CARNEGIE sounds muffled is because she was the first artist to perform there after a major rehaul of Carnegie Hall. At the time, sound engineers altered the underflooring, which led to problems for years to come that have since been corrected. But Liza still holds the record for an artist at that venue (3 weeks of sold out shows). That summer she toured many cities with the show, and came to Massachusetts to sing for 11,000 at an open-air show. She was great. Saw her last summer at a tent show with 2500 fans; she was healthy and fit, charming and funny, and she sang beautifully. Tabloids be damned, long may she reign. She is an authentic star, right down to her false eyelashes, and while time may alter the consistency of her voice, her talent, feel for a song, and respect for her audience are indestructible...
March 13, 2006whether you are new to Liza, or an old fan you'll love this album. She sings all her old classics and a bunch of new stuff too.

Liza Minnelli at Carnegie Hall is a great live record, in spite of its many flawss (sound, microphone etc, Not LIZA) it still stands as a milestone in the history of Carnegie Hall.
I'm a very big Liza fan and I have most of her records and I positively adore her - and her Carnegie Hall album is no exception, but! it sometimes seems like Liza's microphone is tuned a little too high, she sometimes sounds very quite and then suddenly shouts "almost screams" out a note, hmm, is this Liza or the microphone?. The orchestra sounds a bit low, and Liza seems to totally outsing the orchestra especially noticable on the songs "Cabaret" and "New York, New York".
Its either because of a bad orchestra or a poor sound recording by Telarc, the sound is totally unbalanched. Nontheless Liza works her magic throughout the whole show, she starts out with "I Happen to Like New York" and then swifts into a medley of "Here I'll Stay/ Our Love Is Here to Stay".
She then launches into "Old Friends" and continues with her Gypsy Rose tune "Some People" which she performs with such a rare and forceful directness (she's even more convincing than Ethel Merman and Angela Lansbury, which is something in it self). She also performs "I Can See Clearly Now/ I Can See it" and a super funny rendition of her classic "Ring Them Bells".
Discs two starts out very funny with "Toot Toot Tootsie" and "Bucke Down Winsocki" which I simply adore. She then launches into the classic act of "Alexander's Ragtime Band" and continues with "Lonely Feet" and "You Can Have Him".
She then gives tribute to her long time partners Ebb and Kander. It starts out with "Medley I" which includes "Liza with a Z" and "A Quiet Thing" it then continues with "Medley II" which includes "Mein Herr" and "Money, Money". "Medley III" includes "Yes", "City Lights" and "But the World Goes 'Round" she then ends the show with her three classic hits "Maybe This Time", "Cabaret" and of course "Theme from New York, New York".
Liza at Carnegie Hall is a great cd but its not as good as either "Live from Radio City Music Hall" or "Minnelli on Minnelli" - but Liza remains a legend no matter what. June 13, 2004
