Diana Krall - All for You: A Dedication to the Nat King Cole Trio

All for You is a tribute to the Nat "King" Cole Trio of the 1940s, when Cole performed as both a singer and a pianist. Krall, like her heroes Lena Horne and Carmen McRae, is also a singer-pianist, and she plays both roles on most of the songs here. She's able to link her singing to her piano playing in sympathetic ways and projects tremendous feeling through both. Like Cole in the '40s, Krall plays with a drummerless trio--here with guitarist Russell Malone and bassist Paul Keller. "Five will get you ten... " !

Prior to this album, Diana Krall was not considered serious enough as a Jazz singer who could play a mean piano roll. She was a pretty girl, with a pretty voice, who would do standard jazz covers.

But this album changed all that, the trio in this record is brilliant and Diana's talent as a vocalist AND a piano player is showcased here in great abundance. It was good for her to choose a tribute album to Nat King Cole, and it results in a very good record and nice interpretations of Nat Cole's classics. It was difficult without a drummer as well

I don't have a large collection (50 to 60 CDs ), but this is one cd that i listened to so many items, i scratched it till it could not be played anymore.
For me the standout tracks are pretty much all of them

Note: One of the other reviewers here has mentioned a good point, that her current label spends too much time on her image and promoting that aspect of hers. Her talent as a good musician should be developed more. May 7, 2008

At Her Best

This is Diana Krall at her best, shifting easily and seamlessly from ballad to up-tempo rhythms, capturing every mood that a good jazz singer should be capable of evoking. There is not a bad song on this album. This is what jazz is all about. I'm glad I had the common sense to catch Diana Krall perform live from this album in a small intimate jazz club setting before she became a household name. Start with her later, lush, sometimes overwrought and overproduced orchestrations with strings, if you must, but then come back to this to capture the essence of a superb jazz artist with two wonderful instruments. 'gotta love her
