About Steve Lacy Quartet - Revenue

Lacy's commitment to tensely focused improvisation and tight group dynamics is highlighted in this superb quartet recording from 1993. It's a group of musicians who've worked together for years, and they're able to offer mutual support while challenging each other to the limits. Drummer John Betsch often sets up a firestorm of driving counter-rhythms, while virtuoso bassist Jean-Jacques Avenel provides floating counter-lines that knit the group together. The chemistry between Lacy and the little-recognized Steve Potts, on soprano and alto saxophones, is wondrous, whether they're working their way through Lacy's chirping, boppish tunes or improvising an obbligato. While Lacy is dry and sometimes oblique, Potts is a freewheeling player whose passion is always to the fore in his coiling, heated lines. --Stuart Broomer Amazon.com essential recording

Unbelievable--especially if you haven't heard Lacy. One of his best and a good introduction to him. He is unlike anyone else, a true innovator, and his sound-world is utterly fascinating and compelling. August 4, 1999
