When discussing this album with a friend who happens to like the same kind of music as I do ("the good kind," as Arthur Fiedler once put it), he explained that he preferred the "old" recordings with their "more authentic" sound quality.

Frankly I don't know what makes that "more authentic," when what you hear on those scratchy old records is almost nothing like what great music was actually played in the recording studio. I, for one, prefer the high fidelity of modern recording equipment, but I suppose its a matter of taste. It's the only matter I can't argue against, since if you do not like the Boston Pops Orchestra - John Williams, Keith Lockhart, Arthur Fiedler, or whoever - your tastes are so radically different from mine that I can't say what to recommend to you. Listening to this great album clearly demonstrates that John Williams continued Arthur Fiedler's great work in the Boston Pops. "Sleepy Lagoon" is my favorite in the gorgeous repertoire of this great compilation. I highly recommend it, especially for lovers of the big band era. March 14, 2007

December 14, 2004
