The best lush Ella Fitzgerald album, orchestrations so creamy it's fattening to listen to it. For the best of the acoustic Ella get the duet lps with Ellis Larkins including her unforgettable ballad reading of "My Heart Belongs to Daddy".
"Like Someone" isn't jazz really, it's velvety pop. But never just sound for the sake of sound, never mere surface noise. Ella F. remains supremely intelligent no matter what the setting is. She was the most versatle of her peers.
February 24, 2007I decided to buy this CD after reading the other reviews. Am I glad I did! This CD contains some great standards, Ella is in perfect voice and Frank DeVols arrangements don't overpower the singer or the material. As an added bonus, Stan Getz plays superbly on four of the songs. This CD just blew me away!
April 22, 2006I recently moved and forgot this CD back in New York. I miss it as much as my own best friend. This CD captures beauty, love, and the wonders in your soul you never knew may have existed. It's undoubtedly one of the best Ella CD's out there if not THE best.
September 12, 2004 | | My favorite Ella CD, period.
Ella sings with the smoothness of drizzling honey, and warmth of glowing embers. Did I go too far, no not really. I love this album. Every song is a gem and each rendition is all about her dreamy voice. There's no over orchestration or overworked arrangements that can bury a singer. Ella's voice is the blossom on this lyrical vine. There is something about this album that captivates. It is my favorite. Ella Fitzgerald's singing is not of this world and this album would make angel's sit the set out. Hyperbole? Perhaps, but I challenge you to find another suite of songs by any other singer that just melts time and has you saying, "I have to listen to this again...and again...and again. It is a piece of artistry where everything comes together and the magic of her voice and talent is inescapable.
March 25, 2004 | | A Different Recording from Ella...
This is a unique endevour from Ella. It swings gently, and she records some fairly rare tracks. I love her version of "Close Your Eyes." It swings with a sensuality that is wonderful. The recordings of "I Never Had A Chance," belongs with an after bar time martini, before moving on to something
else.
