October 30, 2004 | | Great Smokey Robinson at a Great Price | |
This is a nice collection of Smokey Robinson's music from the late 1970's/early 1980's. Several of these songs are hard to find. A plus is that this is a budget priced collection and can usually be purchased for under $10. The 2 big hits which are included are his wonderful (retro for late 70's) song "Crusin" and the nice pop tune "Being with You." For years I had heard nothing but how bad his disco remake of "Get Ready" was. Actually it isn't bad at all. On the contrary it is very entertaining and has aged better than a lot of disco. Also, in the uptempo category is "Vitamin U" which has somewhat silly lyrics but is a good song nonetheless. "Love So Fine", a nice bouncy, jazzy song is a real treat. Robinson even does a reggae tune "Food for Thought" which is quite good. The ballads, "You Cannot Laugh Alone", "In Your Corner" and "If You Want My Love" are all very nice as well. His slow remake of "Will You Love Me Tomorrow" isn't perfect but is still entertaining. One thing to be aware of: The version of "Tracks of My Tears" is a recent live version, not the original. All in all, this is worth picking up if you are a Smokey Robinson/Quiet Storm Soul fan, especially if you are on a budget.
