About Various Artists - Thank God It's Friday: The Original Motion Picture Soundtrack

Sure, Thank God It's Friday is widely acknowledged to be a turkey. And, sure, we're getting close to the bottom of the disco barrel. But this soundtrack isn't as atrocious as you might expect, especially if you have a high tolerance for disco's Euro strain. Unlike Can't Stop the Music and its exclusive Village People focus, there are many artists represented here, ensuring a fair amount of nuggets next to abominations like Santa Esmeralda. The tracks produced by Giorgio Moroder and his acolyte Pete Bellotte are particularly lush in a robotic kind of way. Donna Summer's contributions include the classic "Last Dance" and a pretty fabulous version of Serge Gainsbourg's "Je t'Aime Moi Non Plus"--a good 20 years before it was hip to cover him, we might add. --Elisabeth Vincentelli Amazon.com

I actually saw the movie when it came out and bought the album shortly thereafter. Good movie and recommended viewing along with Saturday Night Fever, which I also saw and have the soundtrack. Thank God It's Friday Brings back a lot of memories of the late 70's disco era and also helped to launch Donna Summer's music career. Though not quite as good, even for disco lovers, there are some good gems on it. Patti Brooks "After Dark", Donna Summers' "With Your Love", the full version of "Last Dance", and Love and Kisses' "Thank God It's Friday" make up the bulk of the material on the first disc. Disc two contains standouts like Sunshine's "Take It to the Zoo", D.C. LaRue's "Do You Want The Real Thing" and Donna Summer's slow grind "Last Dance (Reprise)", throw in a few tracks from Santa Esmeralda, Love and Kisses, and even Donna Summer's "Je T'aime, and you have a good second disc. If you are a serious music collector and like disco, this is one to add to your collection.

For those trying to compare this album to Saturday Night Fever, having both, I can clearly say that "Thank God It's Friday" can not stand up to "Saturday Night Fever"! The record charts also proved that! However this is a good disco CD with established names like Donna Summer, Patti Brooks, Santa Esmeralda, Love and Kisses and a few others. Buy it. April 9, 2008

Any fan of disco will know there's only a handful of gems on this soundtrack. TGIF - the movie and soundtrack - was a commercial proposition with little concern for lasting quality, so much of the soundtrack reflects the late 70s rampant commercialisation of mediocre dance music. I love disco (and all its subsequent permutations), but on this album I only ever listen to Patti Brooks' After Dark, and maybe Thelma Houston's Love Masterpiece - the rest are either overplayed (Donna Summer) or sludge (Summer's Je T'aime and the rest). Tread carefully. March 24, 2008

... other than Donna Summer's double-whammy of "Last Dance" and "With Your Love" (both of which can be found on Donna's 12 Inch Collection), this soundtrack mostly consisted of subpar material from established disco acts - especially when compared to what the Bee Gees contributed to Saturday Night Fever.

Given their reputation as pop balladeers, the Bee Gees initially seemed like a rather odd choice to anchor a disco soundtrack - that is, until you heard what Barry Gibb brought to the table. As everyone already knows by now, Barry was at his creative peak and the Bee Gees wildly surpassed anyone's expectations - since 1977, Saturday Night Fever still bears the distinction of being the best-selling movie soundtrack of all time. Not so with this dud.

As the joke goes, this was one of those LPs that shipped gold to the retail outlets only to be eventually shipped right back platinum to Casablanca Records. Although the critics loved to bash this movie, there's no denying its appeal as a guilty pleasure to watch and is far more entertaining (and replayable) than this turkey of a soundtrack. Do yourself a favour and get the movie instead. May 17, 2006
