The previous reviewer's peanut butter & jelly analogy hits the spot. This CD is as good as the main soundtrack. Some cuts are from the movie, some are out-takes. I love spontaneous music and the impromptu jam session "Call Sheet Blues" is my favorite track.

Now a plug for the Movie and main Soundtrack:
I had never heard of Dexter Gordon until I watched the movie 'Round Midnight - and I was hooked. If you haven't seen it, you must. Almost all of the actors in the movie are jazz musicians, and they do a GREAT job as well as playing stellar music. Musician's include guitarist John McLaughlin, pianist Herbie Hancock, as well as Wayne Shorter, Ron Carter, Freddie Hubbard and more. Also in the movie (and on the main 'Round Midnight soundtrack) Lonette McKee sings an outstanding version of "How Long Has This Been Going On?". I have never heard of her before, but she is impressive to me!

In closing, I prefer 'Round Midnight over Clint Eastwood's jazz movie "Bird" anyday. January 30, 2006

if you own the 'round midnight' soundtrack, this is a must have.
otherwise, it's like peanut butter, no jelly. or a BLT with no B.

This album was recorded as the soundtrack for the film "Round Midnight",which featured Dexter Gordon. However Bernard Tavernier, the director of the film had the foresight to bring in Herbie Hancock as MD, and allowed Gordon a great deal of input into the whole production process, as well as hiring some excellent sidesmen familiar with Dexter's work for the project. The recordings were done mainly at Studios Davout in Paris, with some other work undertaken at Studio Clair, and everybody concerned seemed to have enjoyed the mellow and relaxed atmosphere which is certainly reflected in the quality of the recording. Standouts for me are "Society Red" with Freddie Hubbard on trumpet and "As time goes by" with John McLaughlin on guitar. However there are a couple of tunes which Dexter didn't play on which are also good; a great version of "It's only a paper moon" and "Call sheet blues" which appears to have been recorded spontaneously outside the film sountrack, and which features Wayne Shorter on Tenor Saxophone. Not absolutely essential Dexter, but a must have for anyone who has seen and enjoyed the film from whence it came. December 16, 2000
