Mya - Mya

The self-titled debut by 18-year-old Mya combines trendy tracks with more thoughtfully constructed songs for a multi-textured album. An array of guest performers, including popular R&B crooner act Dru Hill and innovative hip-hop rhymer Missy Elliott, help out on this set. Mya is at her best in lower vocal registers, such as on the rolling "Baby It's Yours" and the funky, soul-struttin' "We Gonna Make You Dance." Piano and organ synthesizers set a noble tone for the romantic ballad "If You Were Mine," while gentle acoustic guitar play and a swaying melody effectively deflect the rather vengeful lyrics of a lover spurned on "If You Died I Wouldn't Cry Cause You Never Loved Me Anyway." I like Mya, but...

This Album is horrible only two good tracks out of twelve. "Movin' On" & "All about Me"

Mya is so underrated!!

Her voice is okay. Way better than Ciara, Britney & Aaliayh (R.I.P.)

She can out dance. Britney (rhythmless nation) Spears, Ciara, Beyonce & The late Aaliyah.

Pros: Hot chick. Cons: Everything else!!

One of the few female R&B singers whose later efforts are probably her best, this 1998 debut from Mya is some of the most boring and uninspired contemporary R&B of the last decade. Full of trite lyrics, thinly disguised samples, a couple of choice words snuck in here and there and near-zero vocal prowess. Even though some of the ballads have nicely arranged backgrounds, they're not much better than anything else on the album. Not to call her a greatly talented artist, but even later songs like "Case Of The Ex" and "My Love Is Like...Wo!" are more engaging listens than anything to be found here. May 28, 2008

mya is simply amazing

I AM VERY HAPPY TO SEE MY ENJOY HER SUCCESS WITH MOVIES AND SINGING HER FIRST ALBUM WAS VERY GOOD...HER NEXT 2 WERE OFF THE HOOK I MEAN I KNOW YALL SEE THESE OTHER REVIEWS STATING "MYA CAN'T SING", BUT HEY WHY U THINK THERE IS DIFFRENT VOCAL RANGES IN PEOPLE HELLO....OK PUT IT THIS WAY IF EVERYONE COULD SING LIKE WHITNEY HOUSTON OR MARIAH CAREY...I MEAN DON'TT YOU KNOW HOW BORING THAT WOULD BE...MYA CAN SING AND THATS THAT! kinda sorta snoozing

This CD is kinda slow. Nothing really stands out about it. The only songs I really enjoy are Movin On and All About Me. Maybe over time, the others will grow on me :) September 30, 2005
