About Gloria Gaynor - I Will Survive: The Anthology
Two CDs' worth of Gaynor is, frankly, a lot: Beyond her two classics (the brilliant, cyclically relentless title track and "Never Can Say Goodbye"), there's not much that made it above the dustier reaches of the charts, and not much that deserved to. Gaynor was a disco diva by the numbers, and her career lived and died with the style--her records are generic in the sense that they were absolutely of their genre. So I Will Survive is programmed for discophiles more than for Gaynorphiles--the real star here is the production. The set includes three medleys that occupied full sides of her first three disco albums, as well as tracks from her '74-'81 albums that show off what her arrangers could do. --Douglas Wolk Amazon.com

Striking the right balance between the lush sound of disco and the driving beat of funk and soul, the tracks on both CDs unfold and give the listener just a hint of those days when night time adventures on the dance floor was magic.
Of course, the wildly popular "I Will Survive" starts off this set and then we get to two songs that have always been my favorites from Gaynor "Honey Bee" and "Never Can Say Goodbye," a remake of the Jackson Five song.
All songs are remastered and sound great. I even like the disco remakes of Marvin Gaye and Tami Terrell's duet "You're All I Need To Get By" and Dionne Warwick's "Walk On By" because Gloria Gaynor is able to reinvent the song without taking away nor competing with the original. The same goes for the Jackson Five's "Never Can..."
And the price is right. The anthology also comes with a small booklet that includes liner notes by Brian Chin, pictures of the album covers, and song info that includes chart position.
Perfect for the disco fans out there who "never can say goodbye" to that wonderful music! September 13, 2008

However, the album's got a great, intensely danceable 8-minute track of her signature song, "I Will Survive," and that should be reason enough for some fans to buy it. That song surely is great dancing; and is an anthem as well, and that not just for women. I recall once having seen a segment on the mid-East country Lebanon, at war with itself, on CBS's "60 Minutes." That segment included a night club scene: Gloria Gaynor there, singing in person, and her beleaguered fans, male and female, dancing their hearts out. And who can forget Kevin Kline's joyous dance to this song in the movie "In and Out?" I was once lucky enough to catch her in person myself, under the stars, one muggy summer evening at New York's World Financial Center, that used to lie alongside the World Trade Center. Seemed like half New York was there, and they set up a syncopated call-and-answer: "Go Gloria, Go Gloria." Touching, unforgettable? You bet. In fact, it leads me to believe that any female, between the ages of fifteen and sixty-five, in the English-speaking world, at least, who claims to be unfamiliar with singer and song is not to be trusted on any other matter, either.
