I am a trumpet player and music teacher. Any Clark Terry recording is a very enjoyable listening experience. What really separates this recording from the rest is "Mouthpiece Blues". For all trumpet players and especially students of the trumpet, this is a remarkable example of a critical aspect of learning to play the trumpet, which is the ability to just play on the mouthpiece...learning to create a musical sound without having the horn to amplify and sometimes cover up deficiencies in the vibration. Vintage Clark Terry

This CD is a reissue of two LPs recorded in 1957, one under Terry's name (Out on a Limb) and the other under Paul Gonsalves (Cookin'). Both were affiliated with the revamped Ellington band at the time where both were featured soloists. The first 9 tracks really show Terry's technique and versatility. If you're a brass player you'll really appreciate what he does with Trumpet Mouthpiece Blues - this is much more than a novelty tune. The rhythm section is essentially barrowed from Ellington and while they don't swing as hard as a Basie group would, they're up to the task. The only drawback to this CD in my opinion are the Gonsalves-lead sides. His playing seems weak and less inspired when juxtaposed to Terry's and at times they seem to be a mismatched pair. But it's a worthwhile collection of swingin tunes from two of jazz's great section players in a small ensemble format. July 11, 2000
