"Sisters Of Avalon" is Cyndi Lauper's 5th studio album. it was recorded in April-June of 1996 and released the same year. "Sisters Of Avalon" was the follow up album to "Hat Full Of Stars", like it's Predecessor "Sisters Of Avalon" is another dark album, that explores real issues of the world. This album does not explore abortion, racism or spousal abuse, but does address ignorance in popular culture, discrimination of minorities and women. The album also addresses entertainment industry & media corruption, which is featured in songs "Love To Hate", and "You Don't Know". Not to mention cross dressing in "Balled Of Cleo & Joe" and "Say A Prayer" which is about the AIDS epidemic. On a lighter note this is the first album that Cyndi starts really playing around with different instruments like the zither, dulcimer, slide dulcimer and omnichord. The Japanese version features a bonus track, "Early Christmas Morning". The track "Lollygagging" is a hidden track which is nothing more than Cyndi and her musicians attempting to record "Hot Gets A Little Cold" but making a musical mistake & laughing about it and even though the album is pretty dark, it's one of Cyndi's most powerful efforts, that really speaks the truth.

I remember watching a Jay Leno episode back in '97 when Cyndi was promoting this album. She performed "The Ballad Of Cleo And Joe" live in a black spandex leotard 7mos. pregnant, dancing, and brought the house down. It's a shame her lack of record label support contributed to her waning popularity in the '90's. This album is a gem with tracks ranging from soulful ballads like "Fall Into Your Dreams" and "Searching" to folksy/rock tunes like "Hot Gets A little Cold" and "Unhook The Stars". "You Don't Know" is pure pop at its best, while "Mother"'s haunting vocals represent just one more example of Lauper's diversity and range as a performer.

It's an interesting album if not her most accessible. A few of the songs ("Searching", "Say A Prayer" & "Mother") kind of blend together. "Love To Hate" is one of my least favorite Cyn songs. The rest of the songs are sheer brilliance, especially; "You Don't Know", "Brimstone & Fire", "Unhook The Stars" & "Fearless".

FOR COLLECTORS: The version of "Early Christmas Morning" on this import is different than the version on "Merry Christmas...Have A Nice Life." January 25, 2006

A great album. "Love to hate you" is a very powerful hard rock song. "Fall Into Your Dreams" is a beautiful ballad. And "Ballad of Cleo and Joe" is a very interesting and unusual song. September 29, 2005
