From the Living Stereo Series, the Long Time Classic Completely Remastered. Album Details
If you like your western music the way I like my whiskey (straight), then look elsewhere. Let's face it, how many times have you seen a full orchestra sitting around the campfire? One normally envisions a guitar or two, and maybe a harmonica or concertina squeezebox. That being said, this CD is remarkable on several fronts.
The original recording dates to 1959, using RCA's (then) new "Living Stereo" technology, the beginning of "hi-fidelity stereo" sound as we know it today. I can remember listening to the original LP in my dad's record collection during the mid '60s. And make no mistake- this is WESTERN music, NOT country music! I loved every minute of it, then and now. It was a very clean studio recording featuring tight harmonies, and the orchestral back-up added a "full" sound without overwhelming the vocals or the "mood." The frequency response of the original recording is impressive as well when you consider its age; nice string bass and crisp tambourine. This CD can brag about its quality transfer to digital.
There are a total of eighteen Sons of the Pioneers favorites on this great CD, including "the Last Roundup," "Whoopie-Ti-Yi-Yo," "Tumbling Tumbleweeds," "Red River Valley," "Empty Saddles," "Wagon Wheels," and perhaps the best recording ever of "(Ghost) Riders in the Sky." Enjoy!
November 21, 2008Great sound--brings back old memories in a smooth sound that is relaxing. I am going to look for more.
February 9, 2008This is a good compilation of their material. I purchased this for my 85 year old father who is a big fan of Sons of the Pioneers. He thought it was one of the best recordings he'd heard (and he has many SOP recordings on vinyl).
December 11, 2007This is a great cd. My roommate had it in college during the 60s and we listened to it right along with the Beatles,Ray Charles and the Kingston Trio. Actually it reminds me of the KT. The harmonies are great-the songs are classics and the orchestration adds to the mood of each song. I recently saw the Sons of the Pioneers in concert in Branson Mo. and their sound and show is still fantastic. If you are looking for a little bit of the good ol days, or if you just want to hear something different, this is the cd for you. There is nothing else like it around. It is five stars all the way, although better liner notes would have been appreciated.
October 25, 2007If you own no other Sons Of The Pioneers, this is the one to have. The recording is fantastic and their voices never better, even though it is not all of the original members. My original vinyl was getting pretty sorry until this became available. There are no bad cuts or recordings here. Yes, they are remakes, this does not hurt it at all because of the high quality.
