rating: 5 QuoteA great live Lieder recital from 1993Quote
Why isn't anyone listening to this CD, not even a random Amazon reviewer? Two of the highlights are familiar complete song cycles--Schumann's Dichterliebe and Beethoven's An die ferne Geliebte. Hampson's performances are superb, a model of passionate, communicative singing. This recitl was recorded live at the Edinburgh Festival in 1993, at a time when no baritone in the world could have duplicated what Hampson does here. HIs vocal control, intelligence, and musicla command are stunning.

Also, as a scholar of song, he gives us rarely heard items by Loewe, the forgottn Robert Franz, Grieg, and more Schumann. These include many gems, beginning with Loewe's eccentric ballad, Findley. Any lover of lieder, or simply a Hampson fan, should be delighted by this, his only live recital (that I know of). July 17, 2006
