About Emm Gryner - Public

Only 22, coy Canadian charmer Emm Gryner doesn't waste a lot of creative energy on overtly adult issues. The sunshiney flagship single "Summerlong" is a good litmus test: As innocuous as a fluffy beach paperback, the jingle-jangler bounces along on a frothy rhythm as it relates the mildly sorrowful tale of a July romance that falls by the wayside like so many October leaves. And, track after track, this starry-eyed lass uses her piano and gently emotive voice to wring more and more drama from her affairs of the heart--until finally, limp as a dishrag, her love spent, she's reduced to believing that "Death Is a New Day." Despite the Canadian connection, Gryner is no brassy Alanis, no madrigal-matronly McLachlan. Her outlook is youthful, ultimately optimistic, and--thanks to a confessional songwriting style that's as personal as a diary--altogether heartwarming and humane. The kid's got chops. Now if she can only find the right relationship. --Tom Lanham Amazon.com

rating: 5 i love emm gryner!
"public" is probably one of the best CDs i have in my collection. emm has a an independent and sexy voice without overly-sentimental lyrics. her music is refreshing and i would probably have to say that i like this cd better than her more produced "asian blue". "public" has an edge of raw honesty that "asian blue" lacks and it's even heard in the tone of her voice. i love all the songs on this album, but i especially love hello aquarius, wisdom bus, your sort of human being, july, 89 days of alcatraz and this mad. rating: 5 A moving cd from a unique artist
I purchased this cd some years back thinking it was someone else. I couldn't bare to take it back once I realized that it wasn't the cd I was looking for. I was immediately hooked. Emm isn't very well known, but those who have heard her music love it. To this day, I cannot get enough of this cd, and it will always be my fave. January 26, 2004

rating: 4 Underappreciated Album and Singer
Nothing much more to add to the many other reviews. This album is solid start to finish and is definitely worth adding to your collection. It is more of pop/rock feel than her later work, but not pop/rock in the annoying commercial sense, not at all in fact.

Emm Gryner and Tara MacLean are probably the two most underrated female Canadian singers who often get lost in sea of the huge number of successful and talented Canadian women such as Sarah McLachlan, Alanis, Chantal Kreviazuk, Jann Arden and Nelly Furtado. Like many of the reviewers have said it is really unfortuante that more people don't know about Emm. Pick up this CD and give her a listen, her only better work might be AsianBlue, although Science Fair really grows with repeat listens. December 13, 2003

rating: 5 Speechless
Rarely is such honesty and emotion displayed through music these days. Emm is part of what I like to call the greater music community or to the late person, Canada. This cd is spectacular for many reasons, one being Dave Genn (Matthew Good Band) does most of the lead work on guitar. I could listen to this cd straight through a million times. Summerlong is probally the worst track on the album, and believe me its still a great song. I recomend this cd to anyone who enjoys lite alternative music, its a wonder this album didnt put her on the map of the global community. I cannot say enough about this album except that this is a purchase you will never regret. December 12, 2003
