About Kristin Hersh - The Holy Single

The former leader of Throwing Muses has always been known for her flights of spirituality, as well as her earth-mother ruggedness--qualities that mingle delightfully on this four-song seasonal taster. Hersh's loopy vocals seem tailor-made for the mercurial melody of "Amazing Grace," as well as the campfire-perfect "Can the Circle Be Unbroken." Less traditional, but no less moving, is her rendition of Alex Chilton's starry-eyed "Jesus Christ." Devotees will probably gravitate towards the sepia-toned allegory of "Sinkhole," but those not initiated in the Kult of Kristin might want to skip that one. --David Sprague Amazon.com

First, I must admit that I am a huge Kristin Hersh fan. This little cd is very cute but not her best work, as in, if I had to make my picks of what to take to the proverbial desert island it might not be on the list. Luckily, I don't have to make those kinds of decisions so it's firmly on the playlist. Sinkhole sends me flying, it's sweet and funny and I can't keep still, then the next track, Circle brings tears to my eyes. That's Hersh for you. January 15, 2000
