About MC Lyte - Seven & Seven
MC Lyte's career has proved uneven. When she sticks to her root sound--hard--she's at her best, but that hasn't always turned out to be the most commercially viable path. Besides, as De La Soul once rhymed, "Fuck being hard, Posdnuos is complicated!" On Seven & Seven, Lyte takes all of this to heart, rhyming with attitude and working with producers that update the backing sound to fit into the times. It works best when the producer lets Lyte be hard and keeps the music interesting, as guest vocalist Missy Elliott does on the opening "In My Business." Not all of the producers here have the skills--or the taste--to pull it off, and Lyte's bevy of guests ensure that the album is uneven, especially when she follows their lead. Still, there are some real winners here, including "In My Business," "Want What I Got" (also featuring Elliott), a cover of Audio Two's classic "Top Billin'," and, surprisingly, the relaxed R&B jam "It's All Yours." --Randy Silver Amazon.com

MC Lyte is truley the greatest and the best female rapper we will ever see! She was the coolest most stylish laid back inspirational rapper out there. Mc Lyte was truley ahead of her time, No Doubt! Her first releases took the hip hop world by storm even men were tying to flow like this woman and keep there composure. She basically just as Rakim, proved that you don't have to jump around and swing your hands at the camera to get your point across. Her first two releases were so futuristic the production was like no other artist! Mixed with heavy electronic drum machine's with sound effects with a Jazzy feel. When I heard Cha Cha Cha and Stop look and Listen, I was mezmerized! But we all have to be honest this last effort that she put out just doesn't work!"Bad as I wanna B" is a far more return to original form than this! Seven, just basically shows that MC Lyte works best with producers that can match her abilies. The production on this album is wack and cheesy and doesn't leave room for her to shine. Lyte is best on midtempo type material, there are acouple of decent songs on here. Over all this album isn't Lyte's signature sound at all. I wish that someone would take an interest in Lyte's career and bring her back just as "LL Cool J" has returned with "10". All it takes is a good producer Lyte is unargueably the best female rapper of our time. Just as Rakim needs a strong production force, she is in the same situation. I certainly Hope "Da Underground Heat Part 1" is a return don't I am affraid it is over!
February 22, 2003THIS IS MY FAVORITE MC LYTE CD. IT IS A WIDE RANGE OF DIFFERENT STYLES AND SOUNDS THAT MAKE THIS 21 TRACK CD INTERRESTING AND ENJOYABLE. THE ONLY TRACKS I DID NOT LIKE ARE "TOP BILLIN'"& "BETTER PLACE" BECAUSE OF IT'S SAD STORYLINE. BESIDES THAT THIS CD IS OFF THE HOOK FOR SURE. OVERALL ANOTHER SOLID EFFORT FROM A TOP SHELF RAPSTRESS.
