| | My favorite Kool G album (w/ out Polo) | |
After becoming more than obsessed with Kool G Rap and DJ Polo, I decided to go for his solo albums, and I'm glad I did. They aren't on the same classic level as Road To The Riches, Wanted: Dead Or Alive, and Live And Let Die, but they're still really good. 4,5,6 is considered his best solo album, but for me, Roots Of Evil is. There's a few filler tracks, but the prime one's more than make up for them. After this album, he started to slip a little bit.
If you think these lyrics aren't on the same level as his earlier albums, then you clearly don't undersatand the craft of lyricism. Quality wise, these actually might be some of his best. Just listen to the lyrics in "Foul Cats" (especially the end)"One Dark Night" "Mobsta's" and finally "A Thug's Love Story." "A Thug's Love Story" is a 8 and a half min. story. I would love to see anyone try to flip a tale like that, and remain strong for that long.
The beats on here are great as well. The beat for "Mobsta's" is probably my favorite on here.
If you're a fan of ANY Kool G - GET THIS ALBUM IMMEDIATELY. That's all I gotta say. You may not like it as much as me, but I gaurantee you won't be dissapointed.
August 24, 2008This album is so real, it hurts to hear it. Make sure you listen to this last because it will cast a shadow over all your CD's.
September 25, 2007 | | Kool G Rap - Roots of Evil | |
Queens MC Kool G Rap (A.K.A. Nathaniel Wilson) sophomore solo album was "Roots of Evil" (1998). Guest appearances on this eighteen track release come from Jinx, Papoose, Camileone, Johnny 2 Gunz, Pokaface & Miss Jones. While production comes from Dr. Butcher, CJ Moore, Fade For Underworld Productions, Kool G Rap, Haji, Rich 5, A. Evans, E. Thompson & J. Stank. My favourite track on this release is without a doubt "Cannon Fire" an excellent track, a fast flowing Kool G Rap shines delivering a very memorable joint which is laced with some outstanding production. The album's singles were "Foul Cats" & "Can't Stop The Shine" feat. Miss Jones. The former has G Rap on rapid-fire telling grimy street stories while the later is a R & B collaboration with Miss Jones is an upbeat R & B/Rap collaboration. The production to the first full length track "Hitman's Diary" does not benefit Kool G Rap's heavy rhymes; to me it sounds more like something like Mase would rhyme over. "Tekilla Sunrise" is a decent cut which has G Rap in storytelling mode, while "Home Sweet Funeral" has the album's most notable guest appearances, which come from a young Papoose & Jinx. The production to "Mobsta's" is tight; Hip Hop heads will recognize that Cormega reused a revised fine tuned version of the beat years later. G Rap reps himself and his hood on "Let the Games Begin" & then provides something different with the ominous "A Thugs Love Story (Chapter I, II, III)" rhyming a three part story about an affair with a trife woman & the repercussions. Kool G Rap and female MC Camileone collaborate for a forgettable joint on "Da Bosses Lady", and then G Rap drops another thugged out cut on Mafioso. The end of the album is not very memorable with the exception of "Cannon Fire" which is off the hook. Overall "Roots of Evil" was a solid album, one I would recommend for fans of hardcore Hip Hop. 3.5.
